In the web hosting game, you offer huge disk space knowing that most people will not use anywhere near what you offer. Same here for email.

This is almost believable (I believe Bush would do something like this if he could get away with it) except that RFID don't transmit far enough - they'd have to build base stations every 10 meters or so.

I think it's a different situation in Europe than in the USA.

Getting ripped off by MS in the USA is ok because the money just goes to Seattle. However, getting ripped off by MS in Europe is bad because the money doesn't stay in Europe.

I think Europeans will be more inclined to stick to their guns in this case. I suppose time will tell.

MS is not going to pull out of Europe under any circumstances. They make tons of money there, like everywhere else. It's just that they have to give a small amount of it back. Better to give some back and still make buckets than make nothing at all...

Nope - bad idea for the bottom line.

This company makes it's money by being as proprietary as it can. As soon as the company starts being more open, software that it makes will gradually become commodity items - with real market competitors. In that situation, MS will make less money from selling their software. Shareholders will revolt at the falling revenues & share price.

I'll ignore your insult. I am informed on this topic and I know QT has a dual license.

I stand by my original rant. If my company wants to develop software for KDE/QT internally and not release the source code, I must buy a QT dev license (not cheap). If I use Gnome/GTK I do not require a dev license.

If Linux is to replace Windows everybody must come on board, including enterprises with internally developed software that don't want to release source code.

I hope you're not discounting the terrific effort of the Gnome/Gtk team?

Gnome/GTK is no less a desktop environment than KDE/QT and it permits the development of non free software without the requirement of a developer license.

I have been in this situation before. The code is really REALLY bad and was written by the village idiot the first time, and really needs a rewrite to get rid of the incredible amount of bugs. What you do is this:

    1. Try to convince management that it needs a rewrite
    2. If that don't work, go work for another company! Fuck em! Why would you want to work on such shit code all the time when management don't want to fix it?
