  1. Nothing to do with radio interference on FAA May Let You Use Electronic Devices During Airplane Takeoff and Landing Soon · · Score: 1

Whoa, lots of comments here from people who think the issue is one of radio interference. No. No, that's not been a worry for a very long time.

No, the issue is one of projectiles and idiot passengers.

Personally I don't want to die from:
    (1) Having survived decceleration from 200 knots to 0, being hit in the back of the head by the tablet from row 30
    (2) Smoke inhalation whilst waiting to get out of the plane, because the guys nearest the exit are trying to figure out which of the smashed up tablets and phones on the floor is theirs.

I'd rather they kept the ban.

  2. Should not be pardoned on Alan Turing Likely To Be Given Posthumous Pardon · · Score: 1

What does a pardon say? It says "We recognise that you did something wrong, but we'll let you off.". That is still totally wrong.

Instead he should have his sentence quashed. That would say "We recognise that the law was an ass and you should never have been prosecuted in the first place.".

  3. Re:Embedded platforms?!? on Effect of Using 64-bit Pointers? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Personally, both types of embedded device I've worked on have been 32 bit. The first was a database engine (think network attached storage^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hdatabase of several Terabyte dataset size), and the second is set top boxes for digital tv. In the case of the first I can immediately see the need for 64bit arithmetic AND addressing. In the case of the set top box I think 32 bits will be fine for a while yet; there is pressure for faster processors, but not for 64 bit arithmetic.

  4. Let's not rip them apart financially on SCO Gets More Desperate; Sends More Letters · · Score: 5, Interesting

SCO's solvency may depend upon this meeting. I'd rather see this meeting go O.K. so that SCO survive and the case goes through the courts fully. That way linux is shown in court to be a good member of society.
If SCO go bankrupt before the case gets tested in court it will leave a smear on the good name of linux.
