After the last article of his linked to from slashdot, where he explained his laughable theory that the purpose of carnivore was to "shut down the Internet," I wasn't expecting much from his this time. The first 3/4 of the article talked about S.W.A.T. teams, and how police don't need them, even though they are primarily used for apprehending suspects that they think may turn violent, and not blowing stuff up, as Cringley seems to think. Yeah, the S.W.A.T. team really helped take down those two Columbine killers! Fucking cowards. Anyways, in the final paragraph, he then "[blows] the lid off" a secret plan to steal the "passwords" (?) of the "business elite" via web kiosks at the Olympics. This guy is either nuts, or dumb. ---
This should accelerate the mainstream acceptance of the 64-bit architecture greatly. It will easy to port applications from current x86 linux to this architecture. Now if they'd make a 64-bit version of Kylix, we'd be all set! MS should have fun playing catch up with the Windows monstrosity. ---
Chevy Nova was discontinued in 1987. From 85-88 it was a rebadged Toyota Corolla, not Tercel. In 88 the Geo line came out, they made the Corolla into the Geo Prizm. Then they dumped the Geo name (wonder why), and no longer sell rebadged Corollas, and the Geo Tracker, Metro -> Chevy Tracker, Metro.
Long before that the Nova was a bigass car. ---
I think sendmail should be updated to by default use encryption/SSL to connect to other servers. Sure, most other servers will refuse the SSL connection, and then sendmail could fall back to unencrypted transport. But, if it used encryption by default, as such a popular mail package, certainly more and more e-mails would begin to be transmitted with encryption. Other mail server vendors would likely follow the lead after it became commonplace. ---
Did you follow the link? It's not even a windows error. It is a BIOS indication that the CPU fan is failing or that the power supply voltage has exceeded tolerances. Microsoft was probably bothered about it, though, so they threw it in their tech support database.
Beta generally means no known bugs. I'd say the author probably knows about quite a few. Alpha means feature complete, known bugs. Clearly it is alpha, not beta. ---
This is an excellent distribution medium for indepedent console system programmers! We know most console system programmers get their money from live appearances, etc., anyways, they should embrace this as the future! Information wants to be free! ---
a) CT changed the article to include the announcement link
b) I did follow the original link, RMFP
c) You're an asshole. This "point" is nothing but meaningless insults.
Finally, why would I have to be an idiot not to know what something was? I might be interested or not, but I can't know unless I know what it is in the first place, so how else do you suggest I find out about things? Unlike you I have better things to do than post/read slashdot and all it's FL all day. ---
But I visited the website, and I can't quite figure out what evolution is, or what it has to do with napster. Something about GNOME? Perhaps CmdrTaco should give a little bit more background on his stories. Just another sentence fragment, like "..evolution, the automatic animated background generator for gnome,.." ---
Too late. I block any ads not based on the server serving the webpage itself. Anyone supporting those companies will not make a $0.003-piece from me until they change their ways. I encourage everyone else to do the same. Blocking ad sites will not be the "death" of the commercial internet, they just need to allow content providers to host their own ads. Then all this tracking/privacy bs will be out the window. ---
Actually, there was a product, Mp3Fury, that implemented a distributed system (like GNUtella) even before napster. Also, on one of the now-non-existant globalscape message boards, one of the developers of CuteMX claimed (in defense against napster kiddiez that they were "copying" their idea (how hypocritical)) that they had "internal design documents dated [before napster existed]". Also, way before either one, was Scour's SMB search program, MediaAgent.
Now obviously, there were ftp and irc and web searches and the like, before those. But my point is, napster could not be the "motivation" for all other programs/services to exist. But I will agree however, that where others failed, napster brought mp3 piracy to attention of the general public, and the mass "market." ---
But in the event that the Congress shall fail to take one of these two courses, and in the event that the national emergency is still critical, I shall not evade the clear course of duty that will then confront me. I shall ask the Congress for the one remaining instrument to meet the crisis--broad Executive power to wage a war against the emergency, as great as the power that would be given to me if we were in fact invaded by a foreign foe.
So basically, he said, if he can't fix the economy, he'll ask congress to suspend the constitution so he can. Nowhere does he say he DID suspend the constitution.
Now, I may be wrong, but I don't think it was ever suspended during his presidency.

It's just a very clever troll, the accelerator is on the right everywhere.

Maybe you'd be better off taking a bus trip instead?

Knowing the FBI, Carnivore is probably just running an outdated Mandrake distro with this crap piping into a file.
---
Think that's bad, try reading the comments with a threshhold of -1

But then I realized, why would anyone fake it, it doesn't make any sense. It's from windows setup, and it's not an error or a "bug".
Then, later, I realized, why would anyone pay money to put that nonsense on a billboard?
To quote Alex Trebek, "I don't get it."

And, it's not MIDI, it's the PC speaker.
Now, this bug is funny.

Exult
There are a couple others too, like this one, for Windows/DirectX:
Guardian Engine,
and then there's a project to turn Ultima VII into an online game.

If there's one thing that I learned from the Simpsons, it's that you can have a great party in international waters. :)

Let's see, they do a search, get your IP, track you down, FBI steals your shit, case never goes to court. You're right, they wouldn't prosecute.

Napigator contains the aureate spyware. Since there isn't a linux version of that, I doubt they'll be porting to linux, eh?
---
Yeah, maybe if it were open source, they wouldn't be so tempted to put in blatant backdoors.
