I'm relatively new to linux, so slap me if I seem out of line, but isn't one of the main points of linux that you can write things for linux, and you don't have to port to each different distribution? If a program written for one distro won't work with another, then how exactly are they the same OS?
How can they expect us to use GNU/Linux as a name? That's adding THREE syllables!!! More than doubling the pronounciation time! I thought lazinees was key to being a good hacker. We must celebrate our hacker roots by being as lazy as possible. maybe we should call it
The author mentions that we need not give explicit credit to XFree86, because it has been adopted for use with GNU. Can't the same reasoning go for GNU and Linux? GNU has been adopted for use with all (I assume all, anyway) linux distributions. Can't linux be the name of the OS and kernel? Also, he says himself that the name really isn't the important thing, that GNU gets credit is. Every proficient user of linux knows the contributions of the GNU. Even I, a "newbie" (ugh, ugly term), know quite well. So the GNU does get the credit it deservesd.
...I like to think my brain is a little more powerful than a palm pilot.
Seriously, I a agree with the last lady in the article, (sorry I'm too lame/lazy to get her name [maybe by brain isn't that powerful]), technology is funner (more fun, whatever) to think up, think about, and to BE ABLE to have, then it is generally to have. This is true to a lesser extent for computers, but CS theory was still a blast.;)
That might help prevent people (like me) from posting pointless/stupid comments (sorta like this one) for want of/. status. I say it is definately something worth implementing.
Rob, you gave us an inch. Now we taking our mile. ;)
Does it seems humorous to anyone else that two of the largest "anti-intellectual property" groups are arguing over who owns the rights to a phrase? I know it's not exactly the same as releasing source code, but come on. "I thought up that word first, so you can't use it. Bye the way, let me see that code you wrote, I want to use it."
I just want to lend my approval to the first point. It would be nice to know what the general consensus on my comments are, without searching through all the old comments. Also it would be cool if there was something in your user space to signify whether somebody has posted a reply to your comment, though I realize this may be fairly complicated and highly unlikely.
Good point. You can't/shouldn't force people to give information that they aren't willing to give. So if you have info that people will pay for, sell it if that's your wish. Just know that there's always the possibility that someone will create a similar program and give it away for free, depriving you of income. That is as much their right as selling info is yours.
Damn. I thought the general consensus on/. was "Look it's some imbecile making a feeble attempt at cashing in on hacker culture. Who gives a rat's @ss?" Apparently I was wrong. Is it true? Have the fabulous hackers of/. finally met their match ( in the form of some lame-@ssed sales-website ) or did they just give us (you guys actually, I'm nowhere near hacker-status) credit for working alot harder than we (you) really did?

think I've tried that. Think I've tried nearly everything. And I've asked all the local linux pseudo-gurus. It actually sees my mouse and technically it works, but when I move the mouse 1 millimeter, it flies all the the way over to the other side of the virtual desktop. ( I still have Fwvm2? 'cuz it was default.) I'm relatively new, so I don't really know what to do except try another mouse.
That seems interesting, but they don't say what kind of system you get. It's nice that they seem to be reaching out to the Linux community. Think it'll work?
Tell me where you can get a decently made ATX, fully functional, no-frills, etc. case for $30, please. I would love to know. I saw some $30 cases the other day, but they all seemed to be low-end, low-watt, and of unknown/questionable brand. I would like a case that doesn't require you to be double jointed and have a 5 yr old's hands to insert and remove drives. Thanx
At first I had no problem, but then I added the ever-necessary User Space, which gave me a black box, so then I just removed it and added again and voila! Beauty. Just hoping adding URLs to user space won't bring blackbox back
Please! That would make the sweetness even sweeter! Dust Puppy's gotta be at the top of the page!
Also, while I'm here, how come I suddenly can only see the subjects, even though there's only a 1/2 dozen comments? I prefer it the other way.(less waiting)
Don't worry, NT has a small but religiously fanatical group of followers who are truly dedicated. They are becoming more and more vocal, and someday soon, they'll crush this giant, Linux.
I'd really like to try that out, and this seems like it would be the ultimate tool for that kind of thing. My poor computer is already crushed under the load of a Win95/Linux dualboot. Guess it's time to upgrade. Hmm. How reasonable is it to set up a triboot?
Thanks.

2) With preferences, people (other than ac's who will still write in and complain, annoying everybody) who don't like him can ignore him.
3) As long as he has something moderately interesting to write about, sure.
So I say yeah, keep him.
