If you actually read the article, instead of speculating with imaginary precision, you'll discover (pending further study) that carbon dioxide and soot should contribute about equally to himalayan glacial melting.
Quantitative modeling of the effect of black soot on glacier dynamics is a current challenge, but some indication of the outcome may be provided by results of initial analyses of the closely related problem of black soot’s effect on regional climate in areas with extensive snow and sea ice. These studies (14, 18, 19, 25) suggest that black soot is responsible for a substantial fraction of the regional warming of the past century, comparable to the fraction attributable to carbon dioxide. Assessment of black soot’s impact on glaciers will need to include the contri- bution that black soot makes to regional climate change, as well as direct effects on the glacier.

Subway maps don't have to be exactly geographically accurate for at least reasons
By the time subway maps were required, mapmaking technology had improved to the point where an exact geographic representation was fairly trivial. The designer of the London tube map chose to simplify. He chose to throw things out. He chose to focus on what the riders required, and what they did not.
GPS Map designers need to figure out how to display the required information while filtering out what isn't required.
We don't know that. This piece, like all Economist articles, lacks a byline. For all we know, the writer could be a simple "Technology Correspondent", a mere peon at the magazine's vast technological desk.
Climatic temperatures were supposed to be 20 degrees hotter now than they are and agriculture will shortly become unsustainable for the population's feeding, according to what I remember being 'taught' when I was in grade school.
Six Kelvins is quite enough-- you don't need 20 Kelvins.
You'd have to have a very strong exclusionary rule. The purpose of any such search should be limited to "are you drinking" or "are you texting". It wouldn't work-- the police are trained to use pretexts.
Just where are you getting 99%?

Actually, once the big banks stopped buying mortgage backed securities, the mortgage brokers were left with quite a bit of risk...
If you want high rates of return, you've got to make high risk loans-- and hide the risk.

Hey! I'm trying to get people to read the book. These spoilers are counterproductive!
There's also Stephen Baxter's Titan. The ending is uplifting, and gives the reader hope for the (distant) future of humanity.
If I want to become an expert on SQL, I go read the specs
I think that if you want to best your competitors at TPC-E, it'll require more than just reading the specs.
And aren't there lots of sources of organic molecules that don't involve life?
Don't be silly. Vitalism is alive and well.

My library does appreciate lending books and returning them as a digital copy. Can you direct me to one that does?
Seek, and ye shall find.
Why? Just give them the digital file, and they'll regain some much needed shelf space.
Has anyone tried shotgun scanning yet? Irregularly shred the books, feed the shreds into a bulk scanner, and use a computer to reassemble.

For example, look at a picture of the 1969 moon landings:
1. The US flag is fluttering in the wind.
You can tell that from a picture? I'd need several frames to infer that.
Nope. Accuracy and precision are two different things.
I think you're confusing the 1970s with the 1980s. Either that, or you didn't listen to the part about global thermonuclear war.
