Generally, you need to flash new firmware onto these devices in order to correct bugs, improve performance, etc. I've seen many instances of (wireless) router misbehavior due to buggy firmware that has since been fixed and posted to the company's web site.
In addition, to manipulate symbols, many use Maple and/or Mathematica. These are commerical software though; does anyone know of free work-alikes?
