listen.. the idea that value == a right to make money is either the secret to a smooth-running capitalist society or The Big Lie that keeps people in third world nations starving and broadbandless. i dunno.
it's what the people out there in bands do, really. whether they embrace something new or stick to the status quo.
many artists are understandably reluctant to break away from "the system" because they don't have a clear understanding of how an alternative would work.
on the other hand, you have bands like mine. we think almost anything would be better than the crap-factory that is our culture today. in our case, we've taken money almost completely out of the loop. we give our music away for free. sure, we charge for admission to shows, and for t-shirts, but the music itself -- listen to it all you want. give it to whoever you want. we won't tell you what to do with arbitrary patterns of sound. like Propagandhi said, "duplicate, immitate, masturbate, merciful fate, we don't care". [or something like that]
another thing that makes this decision easy to make is the fact that the three of us have decent day jobs. as all musicians SHOULD. it'd help them stay in touch with the real world. bands begin to suck once they leave their day jobs and step into their own self-indulgent world (and the more success they get the more delusional, shallow, and uninteresting their world becomes). anyway, my point is, we do this because we love it. the world doesn't OWE us anything, hell, we enjoy nothing more than playing music, and putting on great shows. if that's not an end in and of itself, if money is the only thing that could motivate you to continue, then please feel free to QUIT. and stop with all the lawsuits already, you're killing what's left of our culture. (who do you think will be remembered 100 years from now? hint: it ain't Britney Spears)
and they both suck ass. but that's not so much a conincidence, they have that in common with every other radio station in DC, if not the country. greater variety (lots more smaller stations) would elimintate the need for every station to have to pander to as wide an audience as possible, and for once i might hear a song i LIKE on the radio. but until then, it'll be the hard drive in my MP3 player that gets the spins in my car.
hey galvatron! nice to see ya still in action, and posting stories to Slashdot! i'm a big fan. like when you obliterated Starscream, damn, i'd been wanting that to happen for years! keep up the great work!
anyone even casually invloved in web design (who's tried to code cross-platform sites) knows more then they'd ever want to about Netscape bugs and annoyances.
The fact that the stash is too small is good - it makes you decide what you really want
gotta disagree there -- although i do think it's important to discourage hoarding and encourage tough decision making, the stash before really was simply too small, especially with the wide variety of new items in the expansion. heck, even in the original, the stash size made it virtually IMPOSSIBLE to collect a full set of Set Items.
putting people in jail for speeding or driving under a suspended license (I can understand both of those
bahhh putting someone in jail for speeding? that's ridiculous. if i'm going 80 on an open highway i'm endangering no one, not even myself, any more than if i was going 65.
speaking of police state, virginia is currently cracking down on people driving with a suspended or restricted license. first offense is now 6 months jail time. and a woman who was driving a carload of kids to soccre practice got handcuffed and hauled off to jail for not wearing her seatbelt. the kids were left on the side of the road.
well my band has been waiting for something like this! as it stands, we give all our music away free on our website (http://www.theslaves.com) but there was really nothing legally preventing people from burning those to CD and selling them, since we didn't want to copyright our music, per se.
finally, GPL for music! this rocks. i'll be spamming all my band contacts now about it;)
well actually i -am- a musician. i can tell the difference between keys....maybe tube amps were a bad example. but musicians cling to methods that are inferior in every way -- vinyl, reel to reel recording -- simply because they are familiar, even though the digital equivalents DO sound better, are easier to work with, are much cheaper, and better stand the test of time. (don't tell me a reel to reel recording sounds "warmer" or "happier" than a jazz disk recording)
there's no reason you can't immitate this with an algorithm, is my point. and maybe tube amps were a bad example. musicians cling to methods that are inferior in every way -- vinyl, reel to reel recording -- simply because they are familiar, even though the digital equivalents sound better. (don't tell me a reel to reel recording sounds "warmer" or "happier" than a jazz disk recording)
always the LAST to adopt to new methods. listen to them insist that their tube amps and reel-to-reel tape machines and vinyl records SOUND BETTER than digital means of recording and playing. it's simply not true, but they will hold on to these beliefs and fervently defend them to the grave. they, more than any other group i've ever been involved with, fear change like death.
no way. video cards are nowhere near a plateu, horsepower-wise. processors don't really need any more oomph to do what they're used for, which is mostly manipulating windows and graphics.
but as far as games are concerned, programmers are constantly pushing the limits. why? cuz you still can't render a photo-realistic 3d scene. people still have angular heads and rectangualr hands. trust me, the video card market is still on the steep part of the parabola.
well not quite. i'm sitll on the bandwagon in fact. my band gives all our music away for free (we charge for hardware -- t-shirts, CDs -- but the software.. the music.. is free. and that's how it shall remain. grow up? fuck you! =]
don't have the energy really to make a real response here. but hey i'l lsay this -- i think he made some good points in that one. sometimes he's talking out of his ass. but his general idea is valid.
When the revolutions fall out of the hands of their leaders and followers, and into the hands of elites and special interests, the participants lose heart and interest. The revolutions lose steam.
i can see the cynicism rising all over the net, where once there was boundless idealism. i mean look at your own post. it wasn't always like that here. i'm not saying it's not warranted or justified, just saying a year ago it was easier to get excited about the potential of free everything.
eh? i hadn't realized the japanese were the Master Race.

my band *is* Oi. as in this classic line, "skinheads are all latent homosexuals, Oi Oi Oi!"

that is the single stupidest, most uninformed article i have ever read.
big deal my cadillac does that
it's a poor business model slump. sheesh. some of us are still here.
