I just wanted to say that was one of the most intelligent and well thought out posts I have ever read on Slashdot. I truly enjoyed reading it and now I am even considering getting an into to philosophy type book to read.
Me too.
- I don't buy CDs (for some reason there isn't a whole lot of music I am interested in anymore). I listen to NPR.
- I don't pay for cable (or even have a TV). I play video games, read books, and surf for entertainment, news and information.
- I almost never go the theaters anymore (once every 2-3 months maybe). Instead I wait for netflix to get a bunch of dvds I want to rent (including some tv shows I enjoy) and I go on a 1-2 month renting spree. Eventually I can't find anything I want and I cancel my subscription until the next time.
What is interesting about this is that I don't behave this way because I hate the RIAA, MPAA, congress, or whatever. I do it because I am not interested in consuming what is on TV, CDs, in movie theaters, etc. TV has lame ads, CDs seem to be full of crap songs (I am ok with iTunes though) and movies are way to expensive (for rehashed content). My attention has shifted without a concious effort. I think this behavior will occur more and more as "they" keep locking down our easy access to content.
Another MMORPG that aims to do just this is Dawn. Made by a company called glitchless is supposed to go into beta soon, then we can see how well it works. Your character is always in the world, and thus can be killed, there is permanent death, user changable landscapes (in other words ppl can build houses, dig rivers, etc), etc. I am thinking that this will be the best MMORPG out there when it comes out.
But anyway, back to my original point, when you log out, your character remains in the world, wandering around, etc. It is POSSIBLE to log out safely so that you can not be killed, but this requires time and planning, so people can't just log out to avoid getting killed or pk'd, etc.

I have you both beat:) Anyway, I miss the old ways of/. But I must admit I find the new slashdot more entertaining. I seldom post though because anything I think of saying has probably been said 100 times already in various other threads. I am content to sit in my corner and laugh at the funny trolls.
Anyone remember chips n' bits? or dips? or something, my memory is already going and I'm only 19! ---

While I am not an expert on Dune by any means, I enjoyed the movie. Though I do agree with some things you are saying. But I think the movie was done quite well for the following reason, my girlfriend loved it. I forced her (she has never read the books) to watch the Lynch movie and she hated it, she had to ask me what was happening every 5 seconds, thought the voiceovers were completely lame, and found the whole movie not very entertaining.
After watching the first installment of the miniseries she was thrilled, she can't wait to see the next two parts.
Maybe it doesn't do the book justice, but what can you expect? Dune doesn't translate into a screenplay easily. I enjoyed both the orginal Lynch movie and this mini-series as someone's attempt to show something the is easier left to the imagination and I don't think most people could have done much better. ---

I have read through all of the comments (just about) and I have yet to find one person who isn't more concerned with how they would look using one of these than the actual practicality of it. I find it hard to believe that a bunch of geeks, who will wear shirts that have lines of perl code, and wear tool belts with leathermen and palmpilots on them actually care about what other people think. Personally, I feel stupid using my cell phone period. I don't use it because I think it looks cool, I use it because its incredibly convinent. A wrist/finger type phone would allow one to be much more discreet, not to mention it would be much nicer to carry around.
Just imagine, you are in class, you feel a vibration on your rist, check the little lcd to see who the incoming call is from, decide you will take it real quick. You tap your fingers together and hold your hand to your ear and tell your girlfriend you will be home in 30 minutes. I will be the first one inline to buy one of these (assuming they aren't too bulky on the rist).
Maybe someone will point and laugh at me because I have a finger in my ear, but I will still have my other hand free to give them the finger with. ---

I agree except on the second point. Most people seem to only read through the first 20 comments or so before forming + sharing their opinions. This results in large amounts of repition for those who read the comments all the way through (this was particularly noticable on the $500 Bill G book story, I think about 100 people independently made the discovery that it was a box set of books =). Not being able to read many of the comments b/c of a threshold won't make a large difference then, b/c most people don't read them all anyway
Of course its News for Jurri, afterall he seems to think he's God. Jurri would never make a mistake like forgetting to log in before posting, nope. He's perfect. I feel privlidged just to post under him.
