  1. Re:Yes MySQL now does transactions on Postgres Beats MySql, Interbase, And Proprietary DBs · · Score: 1

You may think that MySQL kicks ass & is scalable, but you're so wrong. How would you go about deploying a 4 terabyte database that could handle several hundred transactions/second using MySQL? You couldn't! In the real world, you work with real databases (in the order of 4-6Tb), not little toy ones.
How big can you go with MySQL, if transactions are not needed?
I am a poor graduate student, saddled with a lot of data. I need to put this data online, and do selects on it (find all records where time < 10sec and size > 300, etc.). I don't need transactions; the data will be updated from tapes, so no need for "rollback", etc.
I don't have money for Oracle, etc. nor can I administer it even if I did have the money.
The number of records could be upto 1 Billion.
Can I use MySQL for this? Speed is critical!

Instead of taking a very American-(as in USofA)-centric view of this, consider the fact that the Internet is a world-wide phenomenon.
There are many countries out there where mere possession of text extolling the virtues of freedom and/or democracy would be heinous crime. (A certain country with a red flag comes to mind.. :-)
There are thousands upon thousands of people who are today rotting in prisons all around the world for just expressing certain views.
If technologies like this can help these brave souls stay out of prisons, I think they are worth the price of abuse by some other sections of the society.

+5 funny? How about +5 flamebait. I'm from India and I find this extremely offensive. I'l have you know that a good majority of slashdot readers and for that matter a good portion of the DBA's in this country are from India and we are proud of it. You take the first positive Indian article on your capatalistic site and turn it into a bash forginers article. We happen to be proud of our country and you mock it with bendy straw jokes. You the poster, and you the moderators should be ashamed. How can you look in the mirror at night thinking you have done your country well merely by insulting another equally strong and independant culture. Just because we don't have MTV doesn't mean we're as poor and underpriviledges or as stupid as you make out. By the way Mr. "flame others for karma points", your calculations are grossly incorrect. And you think you're more intelligent than my people. Ha, Go watch southpark or the simpsons, you simpletonman!
Lighten up, chief! You aren't the only Indian on /., and there are some of us here who found it funny.
