  1. A week?? on Gen Con 2000 Report · · Score: 1

The Con has been over for over a week and this is the first story?? Did everyone take their badges off yet??

You failed to mention Starship Troopers also by Avalon Hill. Maybe you were too distracted by Squad Leader. It seemed to move much better than SL but still seemed kinda lame.

And what ever happened to the BattleTech simulators?? Where was Yip^6?? Why was there only one game of Chill in the entire catalog?

And to whoever made the comment that the smell was better this year only has to wait for 2003 when Hasbro moves the Con to Indianapolis.

  2. Ummm... Why? on Microsoft Porting Applications To Linux (Really!) · · Score: 1

Why would anyone want to run M$ Office on Linux? Personally, I don't even want to run it on Windows.

Corel WordPerfect seems to do fine converting .DOC files and Star Office is good. Both are pretty solid (although Corel is slow) products and one is even free! Who is going to spend money on this?

What sense would it make to run Office native? Wait for the .NET stuff. Deploy your workplace with Linux boxes with a Citrix client and run Office off an NT or Citrix Terminal Server.

I really can't see M$ trying to make any money off this unless it is a big Embrace & Extend operation.

  3. @HOME TOS on @Home Stops Allowing VPNs · · Score: 1

I have AT&T@HOME in the Chicago burbs. I know the TOS forbids such things as FTP and Web servers but I've had both up on my connection since day one (over a year now). They never seem to check.

But my firewall does stop two probes a day looking for an open news port.

I wouldn't worry too much. I think they just don't want to support VPN's between you and work. They don't want to get involved with trouble shooting for your company. It doesn't seem like they are really out to shut anyone down (IMHO).

Here is the story on CNN.

Doesn't this play into the hands of the Napster defense? If they RIAA members are found guilty of using their copyrights in an anti-competative way, they lose the ability to enforce the copyrights.

So would that make Metalica public domain??

  6. Re:this is turning into WTO all over again. on 2600 Staffer Arrested During Republican Convention · · Score: 4

    Two points:

    1) How do you expect police to respond? At the WTO, there was a huge amount of damage done to property. Police arrested people. Everyone complains. Lawsuits follow. In New York, Police keep the rioting after a parade contained to a park. No one is arrested. Everyone complains. Lawsuits follow. Simple: Do you want police protection or not? Not happy with your police? Join the police review board in your town. Become a cop. And thanks for bringing up the Falun Gong. Have protesters been killed in jail? Held over a year without charges? Get a grip. This is obviously two different situations.

    2) The 2600 story is bogus and misleading. What was shapeshifter charged with? Making gas bombs can be a misdemeanor. Stringing piano wire to injure horses is also one. So is striking a police officer, resisting arrest, peeing in the alley and a ton of other things. So what did this guy do? He was just walking down the street, talking on a phone. Ok. Right. Prisons are filled with the wrong people. Ask any prisoner! My father was a homicide cop for 20 years. He arrested people covered in blood standing over dead bodies holding knives who went to court saying they didn't do anything. If you want to tell the story, tell the whole thing. Remember, everyone, INCLUDING THE POLICE, are innocent until proven guilty. Less then .01% of the protesters in Philly were arrested. What did he do to draw attention? What happened near him that got him arrested while the guilty party went free. Mistakes can be made, but your story doesn't offer any kind of facts. Sloppy reporting like this is why the "New Media" get so little respect.
