    So we can't protect kids by sheilding them from things? Sounds nice in a court room but what if:
    We eliminate the drinking age?
    We eliminate age restrictions on gun ownership?
    We eliminate the age restriction on driving?
    We eliminate the age of consent?

    Maybe, being that I'm 32, I'm a little too old to be posting here but I can tell you without a doubt that my ten year old nephew should not be drinking, driving, playing quake, owning handguns or having sex with nice men who give him candy.

    Anyone who can't see that this case is all about MARKETING crap to youths and not freedom has their eyes closed.

    Living in a part of America where I get to see the Ice Age receed every year around April, I can't wait to get some of this global warming you guys are talking about.

    Does anyone realize that the planet has been warming and cooling for eons before anyone had cars or deoderant? Every time I hear another 'expert' talk about global warming, I think of a wooly mammoth walking around with a similar concern.

    The Earth is going to warm and cool for a lot longer than we will be around. Get used to the idea.

    Maybe the charge has something to do with using false information to set up the ISP account. If he used a bogus credit card, they have a case.

    It is worrysome to see the words 'illegal website' used, though...

    It's actually a right-wing advocacy site.

    So you are saying that only the left-wing should be allowed to report news?

    Maybe you should read more than one day of the site. I've been a daily reader for three years. They are much more of a Libertarian site than anything else.

    These are the guys that broke the story about questionable ties the VP had that cost him his home state in the election. They also were the first to report about military ballots sitting on ships that has prompted an investigation by Congress and special mail flights to deliver the boallots. They have also been reporting the federal land grab that lost Gore most of the west.

    You may not like your news with a right slant, but they are a solid news agency. And thy have all made public who they voted for in the elections. Can you name me another news source that has done the same?

    Hey all! We want to vote again here in Illinois!

    We had over 120,000 ballots in Cook County declared invalid because of double voting or no holes punched.

    Not to mention the thousands of voters in DuPage County who were not allowed to vote because their registrations were lost by the DMV's Motor-Voter program.

    Come home, Bill Daley! Your state needs you!

    All the reasons you mentioned are the very same reasons the DEMOCRATS who run the county government designed the two sided ballot with larger type. It is also the same reasons they mailed a copy of the ballot to EVERY voter in the county before the election so that they could read it and see how it works.

    Our ballots here in Illinois were similar for many of the races. They've been that way for years.

    I can see people complaining about how small the holes are in the ballot. I don't like how the punches don't always deteach from the ballot and you have to check again before you hand in your ballot. But to complain because you can't understand that an arrow points to where you vote after having over a month to look at the ballot is stretching a little.

    And it in no way justifies how people punched more than once.

    No do-overs. Count the votes the way they are or well all should get to vote again!

    I think it does matter who sees the source code.

    Let's flash back to a /. story from 1998. If this code went to Russia, to quote an Imperial General in Star Wars "it is possible, however unlikely, they may find a weakness and exploit it."

    Think about that next time send our ships somewhere like Serbia or Tiapei.

    Not only do they claim to have it, but moreover they say that they can trace any file on the Internet, any attachment and any posting in a newsgroup to it's origin.

    So forward this story on to 100 of your friends and Bill Gates will give you $500 and a trip to Disney World!

    Wow! That story on how badly Gore has got to be one of the best spins I've ever seen put on Gore's lying ways.

    Can they explain some more of these "lies" the press is spreading?
    1. The Buddest Temple was not a fund raiser.
    2. Little Kaylie is still standing in Florida.
    3. His aunt pays more for medication than her dog.
    4. Gore saw real combat in Viet Nam.

    I could go on and on with examples. To call this story any kind of "science" other than "junk science" lends far too much credit to the DNC spin-masters.

    Maybe we need to know how they define "truth"? Is it the same way Clinton defines "sex" or Gore defines "fundraiser"??

    A lot has been said about improving education during this election season. The Federal government has provided money to the states to encourage certain programs.

    Sex Education is being supported as an initiative to reduce teen pregnancy and STDs.

    Drug Education is being supported to alert children to the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

    Would you support Firearms Education (such as the former Junior ROTC Air Rifle Team in Chicago) to teach children the dangers of guns and how to avoid situations where they could end up as accidental shooting victims?

    Corel may be perfect for the task in Microsoft's eyes. .NET will run on Linux, but not as well as it could. Porting to WINE will make the system just run slower. MS can then say "Switch to Win2k if you need more speed or power."

    Think of how well MS Office runs on Macs....

    Fair notice: I own Corel stock and wish it would go up in value.

    I would like to patent the 7-Click+ shopping method.

    This would cover any sales online where you need to click seven time plus enter your personal information.

    Anyone licensing this from me should be warned to be careful setting it up. I charge different rates for my 6-Click+ and 8-Click+ patents.

  16. Simple way to get telemarketers... on The Joys Of Big Business; or Why AT&T Long Distance Sux · · Score: 1

    Here is a simple way to screw over telemarketers:
    Let them start their speech. Once you hear what the product is, interrupt them and say that you are very interested but that your wife (husband, roommate, ect) is in charge of that, but you will put them on the line. Leave the phone off the hook for the next 15-20 minutes.

    This will blow their call per hour average and cost them money. You can even check back every minute or two and see how long they hang on. Make a little game of it. You'll find yourself off a few lists pretty quick!

    Well, that would make Linux grow pretty quick. Picture this:

    A Dell PIII with a monitor, keyboard, mouse and modem with Linux installed: $2000.

    Same configuration with Windows installed: $2500 (since Dell always gets the OEM price break).

    Now who would want the Windows machine? Everyone else will take Linux and save the $500 bucks. Think of all the people who would rather use an Apple but it is just too expensive so they get a PC. Microsoft would be history and Linux, BSD and MacOS could fight it out.

    I've registered shareware using PayPal. I think it's a great idea. It's simpler than check or money order and safer than giving out your credit card number to a small publisher.

    But non-Americans are left out. Bummer. I've found some nice stuff overseas.

  22. FUD... on Salon on the XBox · · Score: 2

    We are talking about the Xbox which may be out next year, which may have a bunch of cool games and which may be compatable with PCs?

    So is anyone seriously considering holding off on their purchase of a game console for a year just in case this all turns out to be true? Have developers stopped designing games for the PC in 2001 and 2002? I'll take this seriously when I get my copy of Windows NT 6 that was due out this year.

    Until then, I'll keep playing my PlayStation and maybe consider a PS2 during the post holiday sales. Then I'll see what my nephews and neices get for their birthdays in March and May (so we can share games). Then I'll look at what my little brother and his friends take back to college with them in August. Then I'll take a look at the Xbox if it gets released by then.

    And one final question: Considering the state of Microsoft's licensing questions for Windows, will it be legal to play a game I bought for myself on my friend's Xbox??

    Fight The FUD! Say NO! to Vaporware!

    If URLs are going to be under the same laws as phone numbers, do that mean they can no long be copyrighted? You can't copyright a number.

    And what about the people who are lucky enough to have the phone numbers that spell WINDOWS or GATEWAY (926-2697 and 428-3929 in all US area codes)? Are they Phone Squatting?

    IMHO, I think this really needs someone to take a good look at it. The copyright laws might need to be changed for this.

    Looks like Mr. Heckler had trouble finding the right buzzword to make it on Slashdot. After a few attempts, he finally managed to come out with 'firewall' and stopped using 'blocking'. I wouldn't worry about what this guys says. I'm not sure what he's responsible for as VP, but I'll bet he has trouble getting his Viao to connect to his AOL account.

  25. Kinda weak... on Free Barcode Reader From Radio Shack · · Score: 2

    Ok, I got mine at the Radio Shack in Des Plaines IL over the weekend and just plugged it in on my Windoze machine.

    The install was long and it asked a bunch of personal questions, but you can skip those. It also had an annoying narrator. One reboot later...it is working.

    So I start scanning every barcode I can find without getting out of my chair. Since my office is always a mess, I had a bunch. My Pepsi can took my to the Pepsico site. Nice. My Highlander DVD took me to something called Ingram Entertainment. Never heard of them. It went downhill from there....

    My WordPerfect 2000 for Linux CD, my KLF CD, my Sony USB memory stick reader, my Star Wars X-wing book (Iron Fist) and my Dexxa mini-mouse all came up as unknown. I also tried it on a stack of D-link products to no avail.

    I guess it will only be useful for the RS catalog, if I keep the thing hooked up.
