  1. - sales trick - More inches with less pixels on Why Are We Losing Vertical Pixels? · · Score: 1

Where did this obsession with Widescreen come from anyways? I understand for "widescreen films", but why are all monitors wide now? It's weird that it kind of slowly crept into the norm..

The screen diagonal has always been the primary qualifier for a screen, especially for laptops.

    That's a linear increase.

Production cost of a screen increases with the screen area.

A 4:3 aspect ratio implies an almost quadratic cost increase.

The more a screen's aspect ratio deviates from the square,
the more the cost increase lowers to a linear increase.

Beware of the 40" 4000x100 pixel screens in 2017!

  2. MTBF Curve on Disk Failure Rates More Myth Than Metric · · Score: 1

I would expect that MTBF for new and old kit would differ significantly, and found http://www.tech-faq.com/mtbf.shtml which defines the 'MTBF Curve' - the variation of MTBF across a a product's lifecycle.

However, by the vary nature of the beast, this cannot be grasped by a single number, which is what marketeers prefer.

This would be a nice application for Sparklines [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparkline]

I will always have two paper punches (hand perforator) at home. One is over 40 years old, and was used by my father. The other will be replaced every 3-7 years, depending on how long it will last.

The old thing is virtually indestructable, while modern equivalents are of lower quality, even though they come with those little bars to align your A5 or A4 paper size (Or US Letter).

Ours already broke off, so I just crease the paper in the middle and align on sight.

Note: That little compartment in a paper punch is actually a supply of holes. Don't forget to refill it.

The same thing should be done, IMHO, with many other things. [ ... ]

A bag of fresh vegetables easily costs $5, and a bag of candy is $2. That should not be the case, since the cost to society is greater than the low price indicates. Someone who only has $1 to spend for their kids' drinks should not have to choose between soda and 95% sugar water. [ ... ]

I agree in principle, and have thought about the tax/subsidy approach in the past. There is one catch though - who gets to decide what's good for you and wat not?

Example: I've heard proposals to start taxing foods with a high fat content, while at the same time we're learning that heart disease is not necessarily caused by a fatty diet, but more indirectly through the blood vessel inflammation due to high blood sugar. So what should be taxed? The low-carb proponents would seriously oppose a tax on fat foods - which are already quite expensive.

On the other hand, taxing sugar or worse, any starchy food would cause a real riot...

Personally I'm in favour of taxing refined sugar for a start.

  7. Re:License on AT&T's Korn Shell Source Code Released · · Score: 2
I believe that most of kornshell.com is as yet unchanged. The Korn shell has been available here in binary form for individual use. There are still some references to this older license, and it stopped at least me from using it for my own tools at work.

The new license is supposed to relax this requirement, and to get rid of the complex deal with gtl inc - in my view an almost purely legal entity created to handle licensing on behalf of the multiple owners of the at&t software -- AT&T+NCR+Lucent(bell labs)!!!
