  1. That's what we DON'T need on NASA Report Advocates Switch to Open Source · · Score: 1

Great after the way it was revealed that things do not work as smoothly over there as most of us believed now they are going to use software whith no, very little or very confusing documentation and no support. :)

  2. They have the technology on When Alcohol And Airplanes Make A Good Mix · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have a BS in environmental science and I wrote a paper on Brazil's use of alternative energy. They really got slammed by the the oil embargos of the 70s so they turned to Ethanol to fuel a lot of their cars, since they are by far the largest producers of sugar cane which is used to produce ethanol.

"According to the Renewable Fuels Association, about 40% of the cars in Brazil operate on 100% ethanol. The remaining cars run on a blend of 22% ethanol (78% gasoline). Brazil consumes nearly 4 billion gallons of fuel ethanol per year."

Which is pretty significant because Brazil is the 3rd of 4th largest economy of this side of the planet.

  3. Resin rocks on Who is Using Tomcat or Jetty in Production? · · Score: 1

Compiles on the fly, the help is in english (unlike tomcat). There are usefull forums with people who have the same issues that you may have, installs easy as a services, compiles on the fly, easy to configure (once again thanks to the help).

I personally think that Tomcat is one of the reasons why the Open Source movement gets a bad rap. Yeah it's free but what good would a free airplane do me if I had to fly it myself but could not learn how to fly?

The support sucks! might as well have the help written in Russian. If you are not an advanced user you will not get it working easily.

No one wants to bother with spending hours setting the app up, people want to to code and put up the web sites ASAP.

  4. Get over it on Consumer Friendly (or Disney Hostile) DVD Players? · · Score: 1

We all want to make money but yet when someone else tries to make some we start complaining. What do you want next my King? Theaters that do not show previews or allow you to fast forward through them. And I also see that you said "I have seen nothing about players that give you the freedom to navigate through". That word freedom is overused and missused just like the word hero nowadays. We are the biggest nation of complainers ever!!!!

  5. School laws on LSU Law School Sues Student Over Website · · Score: 1

I am not sure what the rules are specifically for that university but from experience I know that a University is not a democracy and that there are some fine prints in most US university rule books that give them the right what ever the hell they want to students that are enrolled in the school. And ususally the font is about as small as the kind that you find on toothpaste tubes.

It's called progress get over it. This feels like someone saying that the old Commodore 64 games were better than PS2 games. Yeah I liked it better when I had 8 megs of RAM too... GEE!!!!

  7. How am I supposed to feel about this? on 'Virtual' Child Porn Act Ruled Unconstitutional · · Score: 1

  8. I liked it!!!! on Review: Panic Room · · Score: 1

Movies are a question of taste. We all know that there are a lot of films that the I and a lot of techies love that most people think are the stupidest thing that they have ever seen. A LOT!!!

"Les gouts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas!"

"Tastes and colors should not be debated" as they say in french

  9. Sense of duty on Gov't Wants Techies to Play Musical Chairs · · Score: 1

This is something that I am throwing in there, I know that money seems to be the biggest reason why techies woulld work one place or another or more specifically in the private sector instead of the goverment, but what ever happened to working to benefit the country, the term I think is "a sense of patriotism".

I am guilty of this also so don't think that I don't feel guilty about it. But it seems that our generation (post WW2 and post Vietnam) only talks about government when it's time to blame it but never to embrace it and to make it better.

I guess what I am trying to say is that techies whould not be thinking only about the grass being greener in the corporate world but that they can be in a position (working for the goverment) to try to make a difference.

  10. if Bush wins, R. Reed will make this become law on Congressional Panel Says No To Filters · · Score: 2

Well, if George Bush is elected it will be interesting to see what will happen to this. One of Mr Bush's advisors, the very hidden Mr Ralph Reed has money in a little unknown company called this.com (which seized to operate under that name) which provides filtering for the internet, that company went under owing people a lot of money, Mr Reed used is influence a lot to get sales people into the school districts in the south and try to make them adopt that filter. He succeeded in Florida because of J. Bush, I wonder if this.com will come back to life if GW is elected. We will see...
