Hey, so far we have seen http and a bunch of other wild things patented, all I am saying is it seems when people "go corporate" they do exactly that and start beliving their own PR and listening to the lawyers and such. Hopefully that won't happen in this case, snort is solid opensource goods, but you never know.
Should be intersting to see how long it will take for them to patent things and start sueing, or start sueing for trademarks, or conversly get sued for the like. Its the Internet effect.
These guys can be frozen in liquid nitrogen, exsposed to deadly radiation, acid, base, whatever, these guys are indestructable. I am glad they are non-pathnogenic.
Has anyone ever calculated the lost revenue from all this worthless legal action. The costs seem to break down as this to me:
1. Time spent figuring out we need to wast money going after the average Joe for using modern vernaculer. 2. Getting the lawyers/whoever to do the research to find all the people using "our Trademark" in the wrong way or for the wrong reason and find their addresses (involves meetings and possibly multiple people researching, factor in multiple people). 3. Have the lawyers draft a letter (this could involve meetings, so factor in mulitple people). 4. Approving the letter (requires meetings, you get the point). 5. Send the letter certified mail, as that is the only "legal" method (only one person, but sending a couple hundrend letter certified return reciept isn't cheap). 6. Wait for replies and monitor sites. 7. Assuming they do or don't reply, go from there.
My guess is this costs hundrends of millions a year, if not billions, and for the most part does little other then give lawyers jobs. Oh well.
As anyone will tell you there is really little money in hardware, that is an across the board thing. The money is in service, installing, fixing, maintaing, etc etc.
I kinda doubt Communist China will really be into Microsoft, they may take the offer, but I seriously doubt they will take any Microsoft demands seriously or convert to Microsoft totally. Microsoft is simply too much a gleaming example of capitalism and indivuality, the antithesis of what China wants. Linux if anything stands for community and socialism. Hell it wasn't until the last couple years that the Chinese kept indivual basketball player stats, and if a player out performed his team mates he was publically ridiculed for it. I doubt they will have a longterm relationship with anything Microsoft.

Hmmmm, think you aren't right on that. When you consider the fact that this country is made up of mostly, Christians, Jews and Muslims, all of whom are monotheisitic, while "handfull" might have been a poor choice in words you have to admit, there are comparatively few polytheisitcs and atheists.
As for changing the rules, they are changing the status quo, a societal standard, a rule emposed or created by the population. This kinda crap always happens though, some whacko comes out of the woodwork and decries something. Things will go back to normal later.
But last time I checked that whole "freedom" doesn't really apply to everyone, we have plenty of laws that upset a good many people, but they were put in by the MAJORITY. Atheists fall into a very small minirorty, albiet a vocal one, I think there are less proclaimed Athiests then Jews or Hari Krishnas. You will see a grass roots movement against this, as The Gaseous Vertabrate is my witness you will see the Pledge of Allegiance back!!!!
