While I can't speak much for ShadowRun, having played it only a few times and read only a couple of books, I did play Mage for a couple of years, and I'd like to share a few things on my mind...

First of all, even if I think that WhiteWolf's World of Darkness is a bit cooler than the ShadowRun Universe, ShadowRun's a bit more closer to what I think the future may have in store for us (less the magic part, of course). International corporations will start to merge, even if the national governments like it or not, just like the Japanese zaibatsus (is that the right word? You know, when several different companies form a group to support each other and compete with other such groups?).

We're just beginning to see it in the case of Microsoft, which apparently is going to get stopped by the US Government, but what will happen if some other company starts to grow somewhere else, as in Japan or the EU?

I believe more in a future with giant companies running things out in the open, than in one with New World Order guys running things in the dark.

Of course, having Correspondence 4 or Forces 4 _would_ be cool!

  13. 2 things I liked about this interview... on An Interview with Brian Kernighan · · Score: 4

I really liked this interview, as it gave me some insight on how those Old Masters of Coding of the Days of Yore think. Or, at least, one of them. Here's the first thing that got my attention:
Teaching students skills so that they can step immediately into a Windows development shop and are able to write COM programs is just not right. That's not what universities should be doing; universities should be teaching things which are likely to last, for a lifetime if you're lucky, but at least 5 or 10 or 20 years, and that means principles and ideas. At the same time, they should be illustrating them with the best possible examples taken from current practice.

Now if only this interview was posted earlier, we could've used it on the discussion about what makes a good CS project a few weeks ago, which you can find here on Slashdot.

The other thing is I liked the most about this interview was this quote:
...the areas that are difficult are only two: one that it's too hard to write programs that work, and the other that it's too hard to use computers. So if you want things to work on, these are two that you could try.

I think I'm gonna frame this and hang it right beside my computer screen. Or append it on any bill we send to our clients.

"That's not proper."

Although IANAResearcher or Doctorate student or anything, I can sympathize with mr. Qimron's (wow, he even has a Trekkie-ish name) point. These days, there's a lot of money invested in grants, patents, scholarships and the like, and therefore there's a "first to publish, first to get the goods" attitude in several scientific circles.

Although I sincerely hope mr. Qimron is not doing this for the money, I can see why he would think that a copyright on his works could work towards doing research at a slower pace, and doing it "by the book" instead of cutting corners in order to be first, and not doing enough background research... no, wait, that's Slashdot submissions. Sorry.

Nah, I'm just kidding, but you get my point. If there's something worse than "First Post!" comments in Slashdost, I think it would be "First Article!" submissions to more serious science publications.
