CDs are the one thing we should not be recycling. They are easy to recycle. But let the people of the future do it. IMHO In the future, garbage dumps will be archeological gold mines. Bought and sold for millions because of all the non-recycled plastics and metals the future can grab from them.

They will also preserve information about all we did in the 20th. Think about it! Looking through our garbage is the only way to see a honest representation of a people. CDs will be better than newspapers to tell the people of the future, what the hell happened back in the 90s!

We should fill them up with our daily journals and pack them in the garbage. Nude pics of our girlfriends, scans of receipts, email archives, ICQ logs, anything you can think of. Pack them with all of the things TV and Newspapers will not record about our time.

The great thing about an Atari is that they have no moving parts, and are low power. The tape can be any stereo tape player as far as I remember, as long as you have the proper serial cable.

I was going to use an old 486/133 w 16m ram for an firewall, but I don't know if having that power supply fan running 24/7 would be a good idea. Rebooting on a floppy is problematic as well. (I guess there is a good use for one of those i-openers after all!) The only good reason to get one of those linksys firewalls IMHO is that they are low power don't need a floppy to reboot.

Is there any cheap alternative for a linux router? A small low power EPROM-able device that could run a Linux router at low power? Something without a fan and a hard drive?

Well, now that computers are "inexpensive", why do we want to move away from personal computers back to terminals? (sure, fancy ones, but terminals nevetheless.)

"Back to terminals" is a load of BS. It is the same load that PDA and wireless sales-people where pushing at PC Expo! They want to be the first ones to support the next big thing. But are PDAs and wireless the next big thing? It may be.... but there is another reason to push new technology.

The reason is: They can't sell anymore of the old technology. Personal Computers are cheap and plentifully. If you set out to compete with Compaq, Dell, IBM, and Sony in this arena be prepared to eat it. The profits from a nice new PC is not what it was in the old days. Competition has cut profits to the bone.

In order to sell you something that they can profit from, they have to sell you something new. Of course Microsoft is going to try to sell you something new. They have 95% of the market! What else can they do, besides go after pirates! That is chasing crumbs for Microsoft (they'll do it though).

Hey Microsoft! What happened to the old idea you were pushing a couple of years ago? About a convergence of TV and PC? Did that go out the windows? I guess so since PC are out this year. So much for your vision of the future.
