Knoppix was born as hack to help its creator to have a complete, quick and cheap environment he could use on the road as lab setup for programming classes.

Of course it can be installed to your HD. But the beauty of the thing is that you can arrive at a room full of unknown machines and a pack of CDs and have a class setup in 5 minutes.

In that sense, yes, it is a hack. A very nice one indeed.

    18/Jun/2004 - 09:44

Microsoft released a note today clarifying the episode of the demand for explanation filed by the company against Sergio Amadeu da Silveira, head of the national Institute for Information Technology (ITI). In an interview to Carta Capital magazine late March, Amadeu has said the company used "drug dealer tactics" when supplying software for digital inclusion projects, that would be a way to get users addict.

The demand for explanation generated rumors that Microsoft would be suing ITI head officer. Read ahead the full text of Microsoft press release, signed by Rinaldo Zangirolami, General Director of Legal and Corporative Subjects of Microsoft Brazil:

    Note of clarification

"We are not suing anybody, and the demand for explanation is not related to a personal matter.

Microsoft remains engaged to respectful and open dialogue with the government, customers and industry to address the needs of Brazilian economy and community.

Microsoft has been in the country for more than 14 years. We have a long term commitment with the country. Throughout our 10,000 partners, 45,000 jobs are created in Brazil and more than R$ 1 billion in taxes are collected annually.

  5. It's not all about the gear... on Securing Your Network? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Having firewall, servers on DMZ, IDS and all stuff in place won't suffice to achieve high level network security.

You've got to build strict policies regarding all aspects of your systems and network infrastructure and also write down some procedures and guidelines to enforce that policies.

Training also plays a major role and should target the user crowd - stating clearly what is and and what is NOT allowed and why, the admin crew - guidind them through the principles of security-minded system and network administration, and of course the suits - showing them the stakes at risk using eye-candy presentations.

If you can't manage to gather people involvement at every level of the organization, your security plan is certaily deemed to failure.
