  1. Re:Not that exciting on Mount St. Helens Shoots Steam, Ash · · Score: 2, Interesting

Unless you've been up close and seen something on this scale, you really don't have a clue what an awesome site it is - no TV, video or photo can capture it.

St Helens is one of my favorite places; I ride my motorcycle there at least a couple of times a year (lots of twisties on the way and great views. The death zone from the 1980 blast is incredible - you're miles from he top and there are no trees and the closer you get the more moonscapish is it (though life is coming back incredibly fast).

I was up last fall when the mountain was acting up - a crystal clear day and there was lots of steam and activity. Awesome sites.

Yesterday it was cloudy in Olympia, so I didn't see the plume so I was a little bummed.

Actually we BOUGHT two to start with, mostly becuase we were serving stuff from two major sites and the subcollections on the older version of the software wasn't that great.

The newer version (4.0.7 i think) is way better and we were able to swap out two boxes for one.

We use it on our Intranet at a small goverment agency and it's made a huge difference for us - so I'm a big fan. It's easy to manage too.

I'm not sure however, what niche this product is filling - the box we have allows us to have unlimited subcollections so all of our smaller units can setup their own searches very easily - we just pass which collection we want to hit, and then get some xml back from the box.

So all of our little sub-offices and depts won't ever need their own box.

  4. Validation on Researchers And Registrars Debate E-Voting · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think the best solution to the electronic trail is to simply have your e-voting machines two things:

When you're done voting, the record is added to the database. And the computer spits out two copies of the voting record:

One copy goes to the voter, with an outline of how he/she voted.

Another stays with the computer and is used to verify the e-voting tallies if neccessary.

Both printouts are bar coded and have a user/id pin combo that the voter can, after the election verify that his/her vote has been tallied as intended.

This way you get both a paper and electronic audit, and the voter is assured his/vote is counted as intended.
