They already take a tax write off on these numbers. How do you think MS got so big and powerful? They have paid very little taxes because they write off a ton of their taxes as "lost income" based on these out of thin air warez numbers.
I don't know man, how much is it? It's download-only, HTTP FTP and SOCKS. (You might want to look into the tsocks module for linux, it's good for when you want to socksify non-socks apps with just an LD_PRELOAD)
A dedicated (not unlimited) modem link will cost about $50 a month on top of the satellite costs. Starband is $65 and bidirectional, although upload is only about 80kbits/s.
If I didn't already have so much invested in Starband ($700 or so, they require a professional installation since it is transmitting) then maybe.
I have also seen a lot of good reports about charter. The problem I have with them is their total refusal to do something about the local branch that was a bunch of fuck ups. I talked to regional managers, I sent email to the CEO and all officers, (hint, the emails are unlisted, but are just a first initial and last name), they called me, I talked to all of them, the service got no better.
If a corporation is that bad at getting a local office to shape up, there is something really wrong.
There were some high profile cases of the local university breaking a big (multimillion I think) extended contract with Charter, and it going to court, for breach of contract, but I moved away so I don't know how it turned out.
The way the law works in the US, or at least the way it is supposed to work, is that the employer is always responsible for the actions of the employee, if that employee does those actions while "on duty". Even if the employee was being totally reckless, the employer is still responsible, so long as what the employee is doing is within the scope of their employment.
I don't know how they can get away with it in this case, probably because the company is not an american company, but as always IANAL, and I really know nothing about how international relations fits into the way things are normally done internally.
I started shooting when I was about 8. Most kids around here start shooting or hunting at 12 or so. There are very few crimes comitted with guns around here, and there has never been an incident of a kid comitting a murder, who had been properly trained in the safe handling of a gun.
So I disagree with your assertion that it is never safe to let a child handle a gun while supervised, thousands of people teach their children proper respect for guns by introducing them to recreational gun sports.
I guess we can see your intent now, you intend to take away the freedom to educate our kids in the way we see fit.
Just a note: IANRS, (I am not Randal Schwartz). I just posted his comment for the benefit of the AC who could not access the yahoo site due to cookie problems.
I just receieved a message from my lawyer that the Oregon Supreme
Court has declined to hear my case, thus leaving the unfavorable
Oregon Appeals Court decision as the final authority.
While I haven't discussed further options with my legal team yet, my
recollection is that at this point, the options were all extremely
expensive and unlikely to be fruitful.
In other words, I'm a felon for life, the restitution order stands,
and the statute used to convict me remains in place to be used to
prosecute future cases, with my court history available to assist.
I'm also higher at risk constantly, since any future conviction would
be on top of these three felonies, and I'm on the short list of
suspects for related crimes. No chance of a civil disobedience act
for me. Ever.
I'm greatly saddened by this news.
To those of you that have stood by me since the beginning, I thank you
deeply for your support and trust, and belief that this thing should
make sense at its conclusion. I'm sorry it didn't. I made my best
run at it, and got this.
To those of you who joined my side as the battle progressed, I thank
you as well.
To those of you who contributed to me financially, my banker thanks
you.
To those of you that have helped spread the word, thank you for
helping to prevent others from suffering similarly. Please continue
to do so. Now more than ever, apparently.
To those of you that have challenged me, I thank you for keeping me
honest.
I will continue to be available to groups to speak about my case, and
I will continue to work to change the laws that permitted my
prosecution. A law that makes a person a felon for changing the
background color of a screen, or trying to be a good samaritan to help
the people who had paid the bills for five years, just doesn't make
sense.
But the battle for my personal legal case appears to be over, and I'm
saddened by this apparently final outcome. I have lived for the past
eight years in the hope that the legal system was truly a justice
system, but that hope has now faded, and I'm older and wiser, but
permanently battle-scarred.
Thank you.

Yes, this recently happened to me at work. I told my boss I would build a 1.8 terabyte system, with 21 100GB drives in 3 RAID5s. I did. It came out to be 1.6TiB of course. My boss already know about the difference luckily, and was familiar with the misleading hard disk manufacturer specs, so he wasn't caught off guard.
I didn't remember about the difference until after I made the fs on the RAID, then I instantly realized where the other 200 Gigs went. I could see someone in the same situation with a less enlightened boss getting in serious shit over the same thing.
It has to stop. The margins of error are getting too big.
It wasn't decent at all. Besides the 384/128 caps, it was down at LEAST 50% of the time.
A lot of the time is would be sort-of-up, like every 7/10 pings would go through, stuff like that. It wasn't just me either, it was network wide, I had friends all across town that had the same problems.
They were running a single T1 for the whole town cable system, it really really sucked. I debated going back to modem-only many times, at least modem was more reliable. As it was, every other day I had to dial in to a fallback dial-in just to get online.
I don't really give a fuck about ping times, I would rather a reliable, high speed connection. Since I moved away from the evil Charter area, I have gotten Starband, and it is pretty good for what I use. Pings are always at least 600ms, but it is around T1 speeds for downloads, and doesn't go down too often.
I've noticed something similar on Starband. It's hard to say if my crappy firewall is causing it (I don't think so) or not, but whenever I try to get on Gnutella, the connections will barely stay alive for more than a few seconds, and then eventually the whole connection will go down. It will come back up shortly thereafter. I think it is deliberate, just like it is deliberate that you can only use Windows on the NAT firewall. (Starband is basically 0wned by MS)
Well, I've been putting it off for a while now. I havn't joined the EFF yet. I think I gave them a little money a long time ago, but I can't even remember when.
My christmas gift this year, to my son, to the world, is a donation of $20 to the EFF. To think what we could accomplish, if copyright was reasonable, the things that would be available out there....
I suggest you do the same. Most people here make $20 US in one hour of work. One hour out of the 2000 hours you worked this year. That's all it would take, to give our voice real power.
Like open source, it only works if people like us give a little back. Even if you don't agree with everything the EFF does, they do always address the most important things, and that is what matters.
If you have a good paying job, do it now, quit putting it off, it's our quiet revolution, our secret cause that most will never be aware of, but will reap the benefits of when we succeed.
That's the way it is supposed to work. As a program matures, there will be less updates, and things to fix. I thought this was a pretty basic concept...

Damn man, at least you got *something*. You are missing the point of it all. Maybe once you turn 13 you will appreciate shit more.
It's not codenamed Revelation, is it? :)

I'll keep them bookmarked.
Starband is satellite. And it's not RF related anyway, I can pull 90kB/sec easy through port 80, it's just P2P that crashes everything.

Guns keep authority in the hands of citizens. You are saying that is the wrong hands?

I have to confess that I am not too familiar with this case. The links in the story weren't too helpful either.
/. in jail? :)
Apparently he messed around with some Intel servers? Was he employed by them at the time?
Can anyone give me a quick summary, someone who is more familiar with the case?

The cable modem I used to be on (Charter) was capped at 384 down 128 up. The cable bill for basic cable and the modem was about $65 a month.
Yes, Charter sucks. They can all burn in hell.

Nobody "expects" you to spend anything, nobody requires you to be part of any culture.
I can't even begin to address how ignorant that whole post was.
If "pirated" content becomes as widely available as street drugs,
I think you have been watching too much propadanda. It's a whole lot easier to find pirated "content", than it is to find illegal drugs.
You've been getting that spam too? I keep getting that damn DVD spam, like once or twice a day, for the last two weeks.
