This came up just now on a click through agreement for a cheesy web-movie player. Good thing I read this, because I was planning to use it for running a nuclear facility!
You may not use the Yahoo! Financevision software or content to operate nuclear facilities, life support or other medical equipment, MANUFACTURING OR CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT, WEAPONS SYSTEMS, AIRCRAFT OR NAUTICAL NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, OR FOR ANY OTHER MISSION CRITICAL APPLICATION WHERE HUMAN LIFE OR PROPERTY MAY BE AT STAKE. YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THE YAHOO! FINANCEVISION SOFTWARE AND CONTENT ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR SUCH PURPOSES AND THAT THEIR FAILURE IN SUCH CASES COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PROPERTY OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE;

Why do you all reply to trolls? Even more interesting, why do you moderate them up consistantly? Anne Marie (Signal 11) is so Offtopic and Trollish in this post, it's not funny. (Or Interesting, or Insightful!) -
Even totalitarians need an illusion of justice. Have you read the Chineese constitution? It sounds very similar to our own bill of rights, with a few little changes that open the door for total government control.
1) The state promotes the development of literature and art, the press, broadcasting, and television undertakings, publishing and
distribution services, libraries, museums, cultural centers and other cultural undertakings, that serve the people and socialism, and sponsors mass cultural activities.
Article 35
Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession, and of demonstration.
Article 37 [Personal Freedom]
(1) The personal freedom of citizens of the People's Republic of China is inviolable.
(2) No citizen may be arrested except with the approval or by decision of a people's procuratorate or by decision of a people's
court, and arrests must be made by a public security organ. (3) Unlawful deprivation or restriction of citizens' personal freedom by detention or other means is prohibited; and
unlawful search of the person of citizens is prohibited.
Anyway, you get my point. Even the most oppressive government needs an illusion of freedom. Read the whole constution of China, and compare it to the Green Party platform. You might be surprised how similar they are. -
I guess it would depend on what biometric they used, if it were a retinal scan/fingerprint/facial shape, then it would be hard, but do they have portable digital readers for such things yet? -
In anti-illegal immigration operations, law enforcement officers in the field can use a special reader to confirm instantly whether a person's permission to stay was valid without holding him up for further checks.
How long till a backdoor gets put in, where they can hit a few keys and instantly deport someone without any sort of due process? I am more concerned by the possibilities of abuse by law enforcement, that of abuse by people stealing identities. -
On a side note, a guy I knew in High School made up our whole High School into a Duke Nukem 3D level, back when (around 95-96), it was very detailed, as our High School has a campus layout. All the buildings were there, with all the major rooms, and a few of the not so major rooms. That was before all this school shooting propaganda, if a kid did that today, he would probably spend the rest of his life in counseling.
Since then I always had the idea that some company should make a serious VR program our of one of these game engines, for an ultra cheap solution, with average detail.
For those of you who are still Duke Nukem 3D fans, the map was called liberty.map, and I think he uploaded it to some map sites. Its a large deathmatch only map. -
Email is not ignored. One of my Senators, Chuck Robb, writes me back via snail mail, with his stance on the bill I wrote him about, for EVERY email I send him. I am sure these are tabulated and percentages are reported to him, after all, he wants to know what voters care about, they ARE the people that keep him in office. Robb is a Democrat, by the way. I don't agree with him often, but at least I know what his positions are on every bill I care about.
For reference, I am a Libertarian, since a Libertarian is the only person you can really trust with protecting your rights. I do also send in snail mail letters, if the issue is particularly important to me. It only takes 10 minutes to print something out and write an address on an envelope. Phone calls are also a good way to reach your reps. -
I agree.. this fake web page is something I would have definitely wanted to read about. It is plain fraud for financial gain, no different from the stock market manipulators that posted fake stock stories. Since we have no place to post meta related comments, I will post here. Feel free to mod down as you feel necessary. -
As much as bashing the "liberal" media may be fun, I would say that the real reasons Nader gets more attention is that firstly, he is already something of a celebrity and secondly, he actually has people voting for him, unlike Browne, who is expected to get about 1% of the vote (which would be more than he got last time).
I didn't bash the liberal media. I said I suspect that there may be ultra-liberal elements involved in the media that are giving Nader attention. I didn't say whether I thought that was negative or positive per se. I only offered that as one explanation of Nader's media exposure, which is totally unwarranted, based on polls.
In the 1996 election, (If I counted right) Browne beat Nader in 16 of the 37 states where Nader was on the ballot. Browne was on the ballot in all 50 states also. Nader got.71% at large, and Browne got.50% Now you tell me if Nader deserves so much more attention than Browne after reading these numbers.
If you had an email I wouldn't be forced to post this offtopic, but Harry Browne makes the Drug War (ending it) one of his top priorities. I suggest buying his video, The Great Libertarian Offer, from his website, browne2000.com, you will learn about him, have something to show your friends, and support his campaign.
I just voted for Browne today by absentee ballot. He is on the ballot in all 50 states, which is more than Nader, and yet Nader is getting all the attention for some reason. (I suspect ultra-liberals in the media) -
A balance must be struck between civility and freedom. The balance is shifting toward oppression, and if we don't push back, the whole thing will topple over. -
The article says that the new company is a startup founded by a person with a different name than the founder of the current Cogen Comm. That's why I don't think they're the same company.
Well, duh. Otherwise it would be the SAME COMPANY, but it ISN'T, that's why there is an OBVIOUS NAME CONFLICT, and they will be SUED if they continue to use a name that is already in use by another similar business. -
Hehe, I know why they are caching the data during blackouts. My point was aimed toward the goals of the whole project. I think NASA should probably step away for a minute and set some long term goals, rather than launching the newest technology seemingly for the hell of it. -
The Ku-band provides a 50-Mbps fixed-rate downlink with up to four video signals or up to 43-Mbps high-rate data with 7 Mbps overhead. A communication outage recorder records payload data in the zone of exclusion and during structural blockage outages.
What is the point of all this? What do they hope to get in the way of data from the ISS? I mean what is the point of the ISS anymore? They already know how humans react to extended space exposure. The reason NASA is losing funding is because stuff like this is pointless. -
Ever see that poster with a picture of a road, with the stripe down the middle painted right over some roadkill? The caption was something like "It's not my job".
I think the author of the parent has a point. There is a lack of responsibility with open source, the way we do it with GPL and such. I think there are possibilities for some open source solution, but I doubt the way "we" wrote Linux and such is a good model for mission critical software. -
They better delete my account information pronto or I would take them to court (don't ask me on what grounds, I didn't really have anything in mind, I just wanted to sound serious)
In that same vein, did any of that anti-spam legislation pass? I know there were a few bills pending federally. -
Then move to a Socialist country, and quit voting for people that would destroy OUR economy.
-
You were on the web 15 years ago??? Somehow I seriously doubt it.

That had to be the most fucked up thing I have ever seen.

Link to China's Constitution
Here are some good parts:
Article 22 [Culture]
1) The state promotes the development of literature and art, the press, broadcasting, and television undertakings, publishing and distribution services, libraries, museums, cultural centers and other cultural undertakings, that serve the people and socialism, and sponsors mass cultural activities.
Article 35

It's really pretty easy.
But that's not the point. Why prevent adults from spending their money the way THEY see fit? Why is gambling illegal?
Its just a way for the government to have a monopoly.

Fight back against vaporware with more vaporware? Sounds like a fair fight to me.
