As part of the gang that runs the cluster I am happy to provide some details of what the
systems are. I can provide more if desired.
The cluster consists of 100 identical Pentium III
800Mhz machines with 256Mb of memory each. (woo!)
The operating system is Redhat 6.2 currently on the production machines. There are some Linux
fileservers/webservers/dbservers in the mix as well.
We someday plan on detailing this on a web page
but never have the time. Jim keeps us too busy.
We are working on a writeup page about the technology used for this. It was indeed 100 Linux machines and yesterday the machines running as the web servers pushed out.5 TB of data.
We are going to take your advice and experiment with the best compression methods. We figured the zip format was available to the largest pool of users, but given we have the disk space, we should try to reduce the download size do to the massive interest. Thanks.

Fixed. Thanks, oversight.
