The differences between Cocoa and Carbon apps is troublesome enough without introducing the non-Mac behaving Java apps. The 'Aqua' theme for Swing apps doesn't make Swing apps behave like Mac apps at all.
Apple still hasn't hammered down what the hell "Save" means when the file has been moved/renamed after opening it. In TextEdit it will create a new file at the old path, in Carbon apps it will save the original file regardless if the path has changed (my preference).
Anyway I don't see how the current Star Office will ever become sufficiently Aqua compliant to be worth using.
Why do you think Amiga Inc. isn't allowing AmigaOS to run on non-Amiga licensed boards? Because the OS price doesn't support the cost of development. Same situation with Apple.
Pity nobody is willing to pay the true cost of OS development.
> d) Unless you use ROMs, etc., that were illegally copied, Apple Legal probably doesn't have much to say against this. They may be annoyed, but probably not scared...up until OS X and Aqua will run on it.
Read the Mac OS 9 EULA. Apple doesn't allow MacOS to run on non-Apple licensed hardware.
Sorry to rain on your parade, but this isn't allowed due to the EULA for Mac OS. It's perfectly OK to run MOL on Apple hardware, but it isn't OK to run Mac OS on non-Apple licenced hardware.
Just like it isn't legal to run AmigaOS4 (if it ever happens) on Apple hardware.
An old version of MacOS like 7.5 might not have this restriction, I haven't checked.
I have one of those in my attic. The video modulator was always breaking...
Anyway the name of the game is licensing in time for launch. You have to leap ahead in the 100m dash to have a chance of winning or you'll spend the entire race trying to gain momentum. Atari Lynx, Jaguar anyone?
Lying your ass off in TV ads doesn't hurt either, like the Sega Genesis ads.
I've read all the usual arguments to use either UFS or HFS+, but the main reason I use HFS+ is it supports FileIDs. Thus Aliases don't break when you move or rename the original file. This is a huge human interface advantage.
I also suspect iterating directories is faster with HFS+.
I'm hopeful somebody will develop a better filesystem which also supports FileIDs. HFS+ has a couple problems like fragmentation and corruption when interrupted. However Disk Warrior and Plus Optimizer fix those problems.
For example the 'passwd' data is readable by everybody via netinfo. netinfo has no read/write per user/group privileges.
I don't think the 8 character password limitation will go away any time soon. The problem is so many protocols use the 8 character limit like AppleShare.
Darwin has IOKit, a really neat driver architecture.
Darwin's kernel, xnu, is also potentially faster since both Mach and BSD are combined as one binary whereby a message only takes one function call (thus faster).
Actually that's not true, ObjC makes up for a distant 3rd behind C and C++. Heck, all the drivers are written in C++.
This just goes to show that Apple cannot help but be behind when it comes to such things.
My worry is gcc bug fixes cannot be easily merged with 3.1. It's a real pain.
Hey moron!
WINE Is Not an Emulator
WINE is more equivalent to Carbon
Those apps are just console apps for viewing media. They don't deal with documents and they don't interact with other applications.
The analogy doesn't work.
PS: Mozilla is horrid!
Qt does NOT emulate "the look and feel if the OS". It gives it's crappy Win 3.1-like MDI applications an Aqua appearance, but not behavior.
It looks like crap and I doubt it will ever behave like a Mac app. Has this person even READ the human interface guidelines?

So all we have to do is wait until MLB dies?
Oh good, not too long now...
This is either a clever form of sarcasm or the worst form of ass-kissing I have ever seen!
I find it ironic that Steve Jobs compared iTools to Yahoo and Hotmail, both of which offer FREE EMAIL!
If you want to save costs, cremate them first.
Good grief, at least get the pollution right!
The problem with launching things into space is it damages the ozone layer!
Pth, you global warming fanatics are a threat to our environment!
How about this: it's also unfair

It's right there in the QT6 FAQ.

DON'T have this thing installed in the UK. SERIOUSLY!!!!
Windows is expensive, Linux even more so!
There isn't a day I'm not thankful the Mac exists.

ironical?
English translation please?

I thought they buried him along with the Lisas
I doubt the AmigaOne is POP. The Pegasos is however.

Huh?!
Darwin has kernel modules, WTF are you blabbering about?!
