    Free market? Since when is compelling somebody to submit information to the federal government allowed in a free society?

    The Census is supposed to be a head count, not a name count, and definitely not a survey of how many pubes every american has in his undies. Furthermore nobody should be forced to be counted, even anonymously. You gain nothing by refusing to be counted.

    6Gigs over USB is a pain. I can get a 2.5" firewire hard drive kit for $100 now. If you want firewire and usb it'll cost you $150. A 10Gig 2.5" drive is $110.

    Why not just have the mp3 player plug into a standard portable firewire drive, supporting it with power and reading the mp3 files like a computer would? Firewire is peer to peer man, no computer required.

    Using Linux for multimedia? Give me a BREAK!

    Apple will release the audio and graphics IOKit classes soon enough. Until then Darwin makes a great server with a very stable version of XFree86 4.0.2. There is also a LD compatibility library in the works so porting applications won't be a hassle.

    As it is now Darwin has superior USB, and will soon have superior firewire, MIDI, audio, networking, and PPC optimizations than Linux ever will.

    So choke on that multimedia biscuit

    Darwin mainly uses Open Firmware to get the device tree. The MkLinux BootX app passes the device tree in it's own data structure (passing it to the kernel by storing the pointer to it in r4). One could edit the MkLinux BootX app (which is GPLed) to load a >4MB Mach-O kernel instead of a 2MB ELF binary, then edit the start.s mach source file in Darwin to handle the new device tree.

    MkLinux will also be useful for NuBus drivers and 601 support.

    Unions do not equal job security, they only make it difficult to adapt to changing market conditions. If you unionized everything you wouldn't make the economy unchanging, you would merely starve everybody to death.

    The only form of job security in any line of work is to do something which better serves others. After all, in a free world who would voluntarily give up their money just so you could do what you think is productive.

    Last I checked TiVo removed the firewire port (which can be added later, it's just a card).

    Personally I think Apple should mkae TiVo-like software so I can use my mac as a TiVo. Make it AppleScriptabe too |-)

    I'm a mac user, and I have four mouse buttons, yet I agree with the general sentiment.

    MacOS has the minimum requirement of one button, but that doesn't mean you can't use more. I have click, contextual click, double click, and click-hold. I probably use the double-click more than the others. I have the option of accessing the menu a la NeXT with a click but don't find it useful. I could assign any button to do anything.

    IMO the X11 behavior wastes buttons. I can cut+paste without the keyboard and it only takes one button. Make a selection then drag it, effortless and more intuitive than X11's mindless button wastage.

    copy+paste in X11 has to be the most moronic thing I've ever experienced. Drag+drop text is far superior if you want to avoid the keyboard.

    Yea right, and this is why OPENSTEP was such a success.

    OS development is always subsidized, even Windows. There is no way Apple would make money selling OS X. OS X is merely a way to sell more hardware.

    Are you seriously going to entertain the idea that PC makers will sell machines with OS X built-in?

    Until people are prepared to pay for the cost of OS development it's all a pipe dream.

    Unlike Swing, Cocoa apps (written in Java or ObjC) will actually behave like mac apps. Swing apps on the other hand will act like windows emulators.

    SpecInt and SpecFP aren't good benchmarks since Intel made special compiler optimizations for these benchmarks alone. The only relevant benchmark is doing everyday jobs like using Photoshop.

    Not to mention the primary advantage of G4s is they will run Quartz lightening fast (OS X's display server).

    Not only is NASA a political organization which spends money like it's going out of style, it's subject matter is completely useless except as coffee table material, and really boring coffee table material to boot.

    It's just a bunch of rocks! Who gives a rat's ass what shade of red the sky of Mars is? I'm not going there. Hell, I'm not going to Alaska, not even if you pay me.

    I'm not suggesting government spend money on something more interesting like seep sea exploration, I'd rather spend my own money on my own coffee table books.

    You NASA supporters are short-sighted Trekkies who can't imagine a non-government agency doing space exploration. Well wake up, most deep sea exploration would have been impossible without oil exploration pushing the science. NASA has done nothing but STIFLE profitable space exploration (read: stuff we actually care about, like cheap minerals).

    pth, GNNU zealot.

    You can use ASPL software as you wish, the only restriction is you can't include copyrighted code with the distribution or else you'll get Apple in hot water.

    Your problem is with Apple choosing BSD over Linux. Linux was never an option. Darwin is a far better kernel IMO, especially the IOKit, NKE, and module architecture. No recompiling modules for every kernel release here.

    1) The Intel bootloader isn't out yet. Most open source developers use PCs, go figure. You can bend over backwards to run Darwintel but you'll also need an Intel ethernet card. The vast majority of Darwin developers are running OS X.

    2) No package system. Darwin doesn't have anything resembling ports or dpkg or whatever. Everything is being distributed in .tar.gz and often in source only. When the package system is finished at www.openpackages.org Darwin will be a lot easier to deal with.

    3) Apple botched the first release. There was nothing to be gained from a Darwin 0.3 release. Also their first ASPL wasn't clear enough. That's fixed now but first impressions are lasting.

    Aqua doesn't have anything to do with the speed of OS X. If you replace the Aqua theme with a System 7 one it'll be just as fast/slow.

    The actual reasons why OS X seems a bit sluggish are much more complicated and will likely be non-issues by the time 1.0 is out

    Not just an app, but lots of things are bundles. Frameworks (headers, libs, and related files) are bundles, so are KEXTs (kernel extensions), startup items, and other stuff.

    BTW Linux people don't like organization so expect to be flamed
