Actually, this howto would probably be best written by tons of people, in a pseudo-opensource way. One person isn't going to know all of the tweaks, but if someone (takers?) sets up a website where tweaks can be submitted, it would be much better.

Now that I think about it, this is the best way to document _all_ of linux. An organized site where anyone can write in a problem they've had, as well as a solution. As the number of users grows, more and more people can write in problems and fixes, until finally anyone looking for an answer can search and find an answer. Does something like this exist yet?

There is always something people can point the finger at, but if you took that away the person would still be unstable, and find another outlet.

I just the 35 reasons not to vote for Al Gore, and I must say they are simply wrong. Let's look at number one:

    > volcanoes, and other natural phenomena that
    > actually do control the environment.

So I guess Los Angeles has a brown sky because of the volcanoes in the area? That's a good one.

    How about
    18. Gore has claimed during a 1999 interview with

    > before he was elected to the US House of

If this is a reason _not_ to vote for someone, then I guess you should completely eliminate Mr. Potatoe Head.

    > 21. Despite the viewing public's disenchantment
    > with the television show, "Ellen", starring
    > Ellen DeGeneris, an outspoken advocate of the
    > lesbian lifestyle, Gore lauded the star for
    > "forcing" millions of Americans to "look at
    > sexual orientation in a more open light." They
    > stopped looking and the show was cancelled.

Sorry, people, you can't vote for anyone who liked a show that was cancelled. Nope, off the ticket. Nevermind that this comment is probably based off of the author's homophobia, and he thinks that people didn't like the show because she was a lesbian.

    > 23. Gore is on record declaring William
    > Jefferson Clinton as one of the greatest
    > Presidents of modern times.

What _else_ is the freaking VICE PRESIDENT supposed to say? "Clinton sucks ass"????

    > 32. Both Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have
    > admitted to being "recreational" marijuana
    > smokers when he attended Harvard. The
    > Clinton-Gore Administration is notorious for

If a company releases bad drivers, I think it will become quickly clear to people and they will jump up and down and boycott company Z until they get on the ball. It's a trade-off, for sure, but I want to play GL q3a in Linux!

  16. Elitism and Xenophobia on Clueless Users Are Bad For Debian · · Score: 2

Once again, Linux folk seem to believe that they are the only ones entitled to Linux. Does this make sense? My father owns a company that, right now, is running windows on several computers to get basic work done. When I'm home from college he complains how much windows crashes all the time. So I guess because he doesn't know what "tar xfvz" means, he shouldn't be allowed to run linux then, huh? No gimp, pop, you aren't worthy!

This is an elitist and xenophobic position that will only harm the linux movement. Unix gurus are afraid that their dominance in their own little world is threatened by masses of consumers wishing for something better than windows. What right do you have to tell them they can't run unix just because they aren't a computer science major? Another example. I run linux on my machine almost full time. My roommate is a complete computer-phobe who is the type of person that is constantly afraid they will somehow "break" the computer by pressing the wrong button. I gave him an account on my machine, set up GNOME and window maker, and told him: "Even if you tried to break the machine, you couldn't, because you need a password to." He now happily logs in a uses netscape to check email, play cds, etc. I'm waiting for the day he says how much he likes it better than windows.

Linux is tough, but does it have to be? Because of its nature, there will always be the Happy Hacker Valley Command Line for people like the author to play in. You don't want GNOME, fine. Don't install it. But for people who are looking for something better than windows, we have NO RIGHT to tell them "no." Give them KDE to give them a start. Tell them what it means to "mount" a drive. They want to install a theme? Explain tar xfvz. Explain symbolic links. Eventually, a newbie can learn to master unix commands that were once reserved for people like the author.

Or is that what he is afraid of?

  18. fine example of classic propaganda techniques on Slate Takes on Linux · · Score: 1

The question is, what can we do about it? Microsoft has the ability to spread their views directly to the public without any need to go through the media. Right now, the only way the linux message gets out is some guy at the New York Times who says, "Gee whiz this is neat!"
I would love to see an ad on TV, in a newspaper, or whatever, with a screenshot of Enlightenment (cause it looks cool, ok?) running the GIMP, a Netscape browser, and a windowed quake game. Everyone is hung up on how hard it is to install, but they don't realize once it's installed anybody can use it! I gave my computer-phobic a little account on my machine and he can browse the web, play CDs and MP3s (all legal of course :)), without any problems.
People also realize that the _reason_ it is hard to install is because their machines were tuned to Windows, not linux.
