If you don't mind using one machine to collect the signal and another, smaller box to connect to the TV, you could do what this guy did and put it in a small wire box (like you would use for a paper tray).

You obviously don't know much about patents. They do expire after 20 years, after which they are public domain, and process patents are important: you can patent the process of making some polymer even though all of the ingredents are well known, your new process may make a better product.

And why on earth would you want to give three patents a year for free? To encourage the filing of more frivolous patents?

  3. Bioinformatics software on Free Software as a Public Good · · Score: 1
The US government via the NIH subsidizes the development of bioinformatics software. In particular, I am the coordinator of a largish software project very nearly all of which is open source under one licence or another. It is the Generic Model Organism Database Project, which was created to avoid the constant reinvention of common software tools needed by the administrators of model organism databases.

Perhaps, but the page I just proofed was from a book publish in the 1850's, so it was not the best image quality, and still the OCR did a great job. The most common mistake I corrected was converting I's to !'s. It got right things that I had to look at pretty closely to make sure it was right.

  6. Re:Why a scripting language? on Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics · · Score: 2, Informative

It's easy to explain really: text manipulation. Bioinformatics is really about moving text around. What are DNA and protein sequences? Text. What are the reports generated by the plethora of analysis programs? Text. And Perl has outstanding and easy to use text manipulation tools. Add to that CPAN and BioPerl, and you have the makings of excellent Bioinformatics tools.

Patents exist for a reason--it is a tradeoff that the government has always supported. You do research and tell the world what you did, how you did it, and what good it will do, and the govenment grants you a limited monopoly to use the invention (in this case, a protein used for any number of possible things).

Are you arguing that all patents are bad (a silly argument, but one you could make), or that biotech patents are bad (an unfair argument, why should biotech patents be bad when Am---- can patent one click shopping--wait, bad example).
