You shouldn't have needed to read the discussion to know that this particular distro is not for you. Its right in the title of the story: "Mandrake 8.0 BETA Released". I'll bet you'll install IE6 Beta on your bread and butter machine though.
The articles were filled with things that, IMO, pretty much every Linux user already knew anyway.
Thats probably true for most readers of/. but for newbies like me it was a friendly introduction to what Linux could do. I think the idea was for it to be a resource for Windows "power" users (usually younger gamers) on how to upgrade to Linux. Its too bad it never got a chance, I for one still think there is a market for a "pretty" Linux mag aimed at people who are interested in moving on from Windows.
It really says something about this idea that even the PHBs would know its stupid. I can only imagine what the usability people like Jakob Nielsen would think.
Usability isn't just for the web. I wonder if any testing was done.

Shouldn't the Spotlight feature be above the fold?
This whole idea of embedding ads in music distributions is quite irritating but its not new. That British band\hype-factory Sigue Sigue Sputnik placed ads between the tracks of its debut album ("Flaunt It" I believe was the name). Bad enough hearing ads on free MP3s, imagine paying for them on CD.
