  1. I doubt they could get it to work on Auto-Suicide for Grey Market Electronics? · · Score: 1

Even if they manage to make a cheap but reliable gps chip that finds your location, the most it would do to would be illegal exporters is force them to pull out a soldier gun, maybe even a mod chip like the good old Playstation. Most likely the cost of the GPS system would be too high to make this scheme worth it.

    > People talk about upstream pipes being better for DSL than for cable, but I suspect that DSL ISPs are just as capable of oversubscribing their pipes as cable.

The problem with cable modems isn't that they oversubscribe their pipe (although they do) but that they artificially cap the upload rate. So even at 4 in the morning I can't even have access to the unused bandwith.

I've never used DSL, but I have to say don't expect any good support from the cable modem company. Unless you have a vanilla windows system, they won't talk to you.

You're using Linux? Sorry, we don't support that.

You bought extra IP's from us? Sorry, we don't support that.

You get 50% packet loss to your friends machine on our cable system? They must have it configured wrong.

Our routing table is fscked up? I'm sorry but I think the problem is on your end.

I've never been able to get support for any of my problems with a cable modem. What I really hate is when I get it to work, and then it mysteriously stops working for a few days, then it'll just start working again.

  3. Microsoft's cross-platform solution on Does .NET Sound Like Java? · · Score: 1

With Microsoft's new .NET, you can write programs for many different platforms at once! Seamlessly develop for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 all at the same time! Isn't that amazing? No more worrying about which version of Windows you're customers use, program for them all!

  4. Re:It's usually about competition on Fair Use And Game Mods? · · Score: 1

This has happened before with other mods. Some of my favorite mods/conversions, such as the Aliens Doom TC (Which did some amazing things with the doom engine) or Aliens Quake were both cease-and-desisted by fox. While they can often still be found floating around the net, the quake mod was never finished, despite the potential it had. These were made back in '97 or earlier, but fox had plans for their own games: Alien VS Predator and Alien Resurection which are both fairly recent arrivals on the scene. Would these sales have actually been hurt by the fan created patches? Possibly, although I would have gotten Aliens vs Predator had I not downloaded the demo and realized how much it sucked. So while it was in their rights to shut the projects down, they'd probably have done better (and had a product sooner) hiring those dedicated fans instead of disgruntling them.

  5. Re:voting from the comfort of your own home -I did on eLection '04 · · Score: 1
Being able to vote from the comfort of your home does not create situations where people with a vested interest would force you to vote in their presence. Tampering with a persons vote is still a federal offense I believe, and if someone tried to do it you could call the cops on them. We've been using a vote by mail system for quite a while here in Oregon; I voted from the comfort of my living room a week before the election. The primary concerns of online voting would be privacy and authentication, not peoples votes being coerced.

Besides which, there are two distinct issues here, electronic voting does not mean it needs to be online voting. I'd like to see the voting done at the polls on computer, but I don't trust internet security (is that an oxy moron?) enough for a web based voting system.

  6. Anyone have a copy of it? on Sweet, Sweet Mathworld Is Gone · · Score: 1
This is the sort of thing that ought to be put onto Mojo Nation. Then nobody could remove it without disabling a large chunk of the net.

When will companies realize that having stuff available online is more advertising than anything? I would have never have heard of the actual book if I hadn't found the web version on google. I was tempted to buy a copy before, but not anymore.

My computer is encrypted like that, only it's because I remmapped the keys to Dvorak. I type just fine on it. Do they still make those programmable keyboards that were so hot about five years ago?
