    This is the first find, AFAIK, of a meteor impact affecting human civilization directly.

    Well that depends, human civilization or humans for that matter might have never evolved had that meteor 65 million years ago not wiped out the dinosaurs. We might still be rodent like creatures trying to not become lunch if the dinosaurs were still running around.

    But i was talking pure purformance wise. Assuming you didn't have any problems with IRQ sharing and were only using one device per IDE channel wouldn't the Plextor 24x IDE burner be better to have in there than a 12x SCSI??

    I totally understand the case for SCSI hard disks since they are faster and more reliable but SCSI optical drives? In the article they mention the plextor 12x SCSI burner but wouldn't the new plextor 24x be way faster even if it is ATAPI? and its pretty easy to find 16x DVD-ROM drives out there as well. From a pure purformance perspective wouldn't i be better off with optical drives on IDE (one drive per channel of course) and SCSI hard disks?

    It's also a better value in the long run because from what I understand the average plasma display dies in about 18 months when the plasma "wears out" (though the technology is improving) while the LCD would last quite a bit longer (though I'm not sure of the exact amount of time).

    We hope but remember what happened for Y2K, a mad dash to rewrite 20 - 30 year old COBOL and other progs that listed the date in only 2 digits and the original programmers thought would be replaced years before Y2K came up.

    From my understanding the major problem doesn't occur till 2038 when 32-bit time reaches 2,147,483,647 seconds. 2,147,483,647 is the biggest number a 32-bit system can register.

    Last month 118,000+ people lost their jobs. Compainies like HP, Lucent, and JDSU laid off thosands each. How many frontpage monkeys could any of these have? maybe 100 - 200 tops? What do you think all the other layoffs were? I agree most dotcom refugees are frontpage monkeys but right now a lot of the unemployed in the tech sector aren't from dotcoms.

    You forgot to mention the spin off of Agilent in 1999 which consisited of the test and measurement parts of the old HP, which for years was the company's backbone.

    I'm not sure how serious a workstation/server you're talking about but here at my work we have some dual 64-bit UltraSPARC systems that work fine off of 400 watt power supplies. So if you're talking about the 64-bit workstation/server space, 130 watts per processor is in fact fairly astronomical.

    You can get a Palomino now if you want it. In a laptop its called a Athlon4 and in deaktop its called a Athlon MP.

    Tyan is the only manufacturer so far, they make 1 board in 3 levels of features, highest having Ultra160 SCSI and server management on board. They are still rather pricy though, the min board with no SCSI or server management is still about $300 most places. You could wait for the cheaper duel chip boards coming out based on the 760MPX chipset later this year.

    Though only the Athlon MP chips are officially supported on the Tyan boards from what i hear all the socket A chips work though your warrenty might get voided. If you want to stay with the official Athlon MP chips you might want to wait till the 5th of september when AMD unvails the new Athlon MP 1.4 Ghz chips which will drive down the prices of the other Athlon MP chips. Athlon MP is in my opinion worth it since they are based on the new Palomino or Athlon 4 core, but i'm a sucker for high speed.

    Being a nerd, remember getting mistreated by bullies back in school? Remember telling the teacher and being told you'll need some solid proof before any actions would be taken or being told to not be a "tattle-tale"? And remember that bitter taste when nothing was done to them? Well some bullies grow up to wear uniforms, and this decision basically takes away one of your ways of having proof should you be mistreated, thus opening the path for you again taste the bitterness of injustice.

    I believe AMD will be transitioning to their own hypertransport bus which Sun is also planning on using. If anything this will only accelerate the transition.

    obtw- Intel does not own the Athlon core, only the Alpha EV6 bus it runs on.

    I remember hardly ever making the toy on the front of the box, more often then not I'd build little model space craft, ships, or airplanes from the pieces. The utility of the pieces in the past allowed your creativity to go with very few bounds but now days you're almost forced into making the toy on the box. The utility of the lego pieces is what made them great and i hope they go back to that by the time i have kids.

    I remember seeing something on TV about the NSA developing face recognition software/hardware for log ins to computers so it can't be a totally imported idea to these (US) shores.

    The prices on ebay are high compaired to what you can get direct if you live near a former dot com area and know where to go(dot com places that just went or about to go under). I got a Sun E420R system for only $300 fully loaded, which if you aren't aware is insanely low. Of course you have to race the used system resellers to the dot com fire sales but if you want some good stuff really cheap its worth keeping an eye out for notices (hint: look for signs on the doors of the dying dot com down the street, won't usually be listed in the papers).

    AMD has a solution, its called hypertransport, more info can be found here. Sun has already said they will use it in their systems as well.
