I agree seriously how many bridges does the gp cross that regularly collapse?
the only one i know of during my lifetime that was within 1000 miles of me is the I-35 collapse in MN about 5 years ago? and i still have never been anywhere near that bridge.
why can't we have it both ways? the computer can safely handle 90% of the issues but when it detects an "unknown, may not be safe to pass" then the car comes to a stop and has the human take over. remember there is still a human in the car, why not let the human handle the edge cases.
if the car sees it far enough ahead of time it may be possible for it to warn the human of the upcoming hazard and have the human take over before they even reach the obstacle without having to stop. and then once navigated past the obstacle the autopilot could be turned on again.
to be honest most of the time i would trust a computer more than most of the human drivers out there. humans show really bad judgement especially during poor rood conditions such as when there is snow and ice.
a better way to say it might be "I can't give you my password. if i were to so easily hand out my personal passwords, then how could you trust me to keep any work passwords secret"
sure exactly the thing we want for first contact with an alien race
alien: i like these humans! they keep sending us these tasty frozen dinners and microwaving them upon arrival so they are nice and toasty warm upon delivery!
just like all the other doomsayers, one time they might actually get it right by pure chance and then everyone will have forgotten about all the other times they were wrong.
We like him because he is sort of our "Robin Hood". he takes from the big media companies and gives to the media-poor...
the audience of this site typically hates MPAA/RIAA they are like the sheriff. and we don't entirely like most IP laws and think they are too restrictive.
but changing the serial isn't enough, unless you do it after every print job. the problem with the serial is they can tell multiple sheets of paper came from the same printer. if you make a mistake and print out objectionable content, and then forget to change the serial and print out some non-objectionable material and are carrying that piece of paper around, they can then track you back to the objectionable content which has the same serial. even if that is not the same serial that originally shipped with the printer.
also keep in mind that what some govt's (China for example) view as objectionable might be viewed as perfectly innocent by many people.
i think one of the major issues is that they can tell two separate pages came from the same printer. it isn't necessarily important that they ever have to actually find the particular printer if they find other, possibly non-objectionable content, on your person from that same printer.
Darn you, now those creepers with exceedingly lower ID numbers are going to start coming out of the woodwork, calling everyone with a higher ID a noob.
i don't like the idea of a death tax, but it seems the entire solution would be to tax the assets upon death of the original owner, when they are transferred to the beneficiary, as if the original owner had sold them. that way any capital gains on those assets will be taxed upon the original owners death. After paying the tax the beneficiary would now own those assets with a cost basis being the value that they had at the original owners death. they would only be liable for taxes on any additional gains after that point.
I still don't understand. At some point you need to pay back that loan, won't you need to sell some stock? thus realizing income and being taxed on it? you can't just keep taking out new loans to pay off the old loans.
I also will no longer buy any ubisoft games until they give up on this DRM crap.
what finally did it for me was when their DRM servers were down over the last christmas and new years weekends when i had vacation and was unable to play the games i had bought.
i think most of their games have an "offline mode" but it cuts feature out of the game, and at least for a few of their titles titles will not allow you to load saved games that were started in online mode.
and when you are in offline mode they disable certain parts of the game.
not sure about assassin's creed, but in Might and Magic: Heroes 6, they disable the "dynasties" which give your character some special weapons and powers when in online mode.
A bigger issue however is that when in offline mode you are unable to load any saved games that were played in Online mode, and if you happen to be in an online game you are immediately kicked to the main menu.
i agree with you. i have worked with languages for years that either had very poor debuggers or using the debugger just wasn't practical for one reason or another.
printing variables out or logging them to a file isn't much different than setting a watch on them in a debugger anyway. if all i need to see is the value of a variable what does a debugger even gain me?
people have gotten lazy they don't know how to debug without a debugger... "if all you have is a hammer then everything looks like a nail"
This is why you do your research and verify they don't use the same backend provider. just because you are using the cloud doesn't mean you should get lazy.
and really even then you should still keep an offline backup that is outside of the cloud. i am not advocating that you should only use the cloud for all your storage needs.
if you are storing your data in the cloud "backups" mean you use multiple companies. that way if one company is shutdown, then your data is still in the cloud elsewhere. view it as losing a disk from a raid array (yes i know raid isn't meant for backup) you need to start rebuilding the array before you lose the rest.
I am not saying Zynga is going to be losing any sleep over this
oh i very well doubt Zynga will lose any sleep over this...
ex staffer says "zynga's motto is 'do evil'". also "the source said that staffers were, and are still, instructed to blatantly steal the idea of competitors. He recalls a time when founder Mark Pincus spoke on the subject, allegedly saying “I don’t f**king want innovation. You’re not smarter than your competitor. Just copy what they do and do it until you get their numbers.” "

i think it is spelled "Mafiaa" now and sometimes "RIAA"

The RIAA/MPAA don't seem much better than criminals themselves most the time.
can't say i feel sorry for them because some other criminal is ripping them off.

clearly judging by the name they only intended it to work 365 days a year
it's a leap year, they can be down a full day and still claim they were up for 365 days this year!

since when has the TSA cared about efficiency or practicality? or if it even works?
need i post a link to the video with adam savage claiming to have gone through the body scanner with a 12 inch razer blade?
i believe Mr Anonymous Coward qualifies as the 3 digit...is there a 2 digit in the crowd?
