I'll have to check it out at home and comment further, but it mentions something about the clockrate parameter being invalid. I entered the monitor's clock in MHz, but it didn't like it. Since it doesn't know the monitor rate, when I run with the nvidia (not nv) driver it tells me my monitor is not able to handle the default modelines. Very curious indeed

I shall be making a second attempt this weekend (last week was spent at the home office in NC) since it's a relatively fresh x4 install. What bothers me is the NV driver works fine while the nVidia does not. I have much puttering around to do.

  2. Re:Ummm.... on Anti-Aliased Text in X11 Continued · · Score: 1

Tell me about. It is especially troubling when you try to set up nVidia graphics cards with the nvidia driver instead of the default nv driver. It won't work out too well since X4 doesn't allow you to specify a monitor clockrate. You therefore have no way of telling the system that you monitor can handle the card, and has been doing so for 2 or more years. Chalk this one up to nVidia, since their documentation is more along the lines of "don't do this" when they don't tell you how to re-define a default behaviour. The biggest problem is getting the 3d stuff working since it keeps calling the .a version of the HAL drivers instead of the .so version. It does not, however tell you how to reference one over the other, and instead does it automatically.

If traffic backs up, I can see it over the hill most of the time and take one of the alternate routes. I don't mind how much I get paid, because I live quite comfortably without a credit card or any of the other PITAs of modern life. I do live near Marconi, so there's no chance of buying a nice house around here (since FORE came here, prices have jumped a bunch) so I'll move further north and possibly consult..

I always thought that flex time was a way by which the management would save money. It doesn't have to pay overtime to ppl who work more :-)

I think what you mention is called "comp time", or compensatory time for overtime worked. We have this along with flex time. It helps keep down on unpaid overtime, which you don't get if you are an exempt employee. If you are salaried and you run comp time, you are considered exempt -- any amount of time spent at the office will suffice as long as the job is done. Unfortunately, this is abused by some companies, so the logical result by HR to counteract some of the effects is comp time. You get time for time in vacation hours. It works great here.

Pen/paper/punch ballots are the SIMPLEST form of voting out there. Could you imagine when everything is on computer, and the server goes down? watch complexity rise to a near-infinite level as they scramble to put back what was discarded.

Then you add in the 3r337 h4x0rz and you are in for a world of hurt, reliability issues with the outcome become of paramount concern.

The "complexity" of the WPB ballot came from ignorance on the part of the voters. And who said that those 19,000 ballots didn't include those who voted correctly after realising a mistake. And why would either side double-punch those ballots? Those are the questions, and they all too often come up this century..

From the pictures I've seen, the ballots seat the same way they do here in Pennsylvania. They have on the machine the following steps:

    1. Place ballot in machine.
    2. Be certain holes on top of ballot are securely on the red pegs
    3. Work through the book, Picking from the choices on each page.
    4. (on the straight party page) If you are voting straight party, please stop here, and remove your ballot once you select your party.

The big UI problem I see with this particular ballot "machine" is the number of holes available. They have 14 holes on this type of machine, and in the state of Pennsylvania, this was no problem. We had 5 candidates MAX for each page. This left us with 5 candidates down the left side, with every other hole covered up by the template. Florida had 10 candidates, and they also used the cover-up templates to keep invalid votes from happening at the bottom. The best solution would probably be another layer under the template that is pressure sensitive and snaps back whenever you remove the pin. If you want to start over (hit the wrong thing) you can request another ballot. The shape of the table would change slightly, but it may be a worthwhile way of keeping double-punches down.

The thing that kills me is more political than anything: Why complain now? WPB had 15,000 double-punches in 1996. I suppose it only matters during a close race..

Besides flaming, what is your point? Seriously, these ballots require thought. That was they way they were designed. They aren't multi-million dollar supercomputers. They are a card holder with a built-in punch. Why is that so wrong to admit? My point above was that interfaces have a way of asking "are you sure?" but in this case that cannot apply since this thing is just an inanimate hunk of plastic and metal. Interfaces should be intelligent, and as far as interfaces go, this ballot is rather straightforward. In fact, we use the same ones in Pennsylvania. We did space them out on our ballots, and we had five instead of seven choices, but it is a matter of saying to yourself "are you sure?" in your head instead of a computer checking your work..

This ballot is in no way similar to a computer interface. The "are you sure?" message is up to the user, not the ballot template. The template is designed to help people as much as they can, without printing the entire platform.

This thing WAS designed as a computer interface is. The only difference is a lack of undo-- kinda like the real world.

I must say that it would be better if they used the same "tall" ballots we use in Butler County, PA. They are at least twice as tall, and they have tonnes of room between choices, which stand all on the left page. Could lefties complain next that they missed the hole because their hand was over it?
