    >>Most Open Source users seem to think programming is just something you pick up on the weekend and then you whip out

See, now if we had Visual Basic for Linux this wouldn't be a problem....

Tai Chi is a martial art form(Yang style, etc), and probably one of the most sophisticated ones at that. It's a soft style, and the vast majority of tai chi taught in the West is not the martial art but a simplified exercise derived from it.

A 3d geometry accel driver will be an entirely different beast than the current tnt drivers. openGL drivers are very very difficult to write, most companies spend years with large engineering teams(working with the designers and vhdl programmers) to write decent drivers.

  4. don't go bashing 3dfx on 3dfx to develop DRI for linux · · Score: 1

Bash the voodoo all you like, and bash their closed source libs if you want. However if it weren't for 3dfx and glide, there would be no Q3Test for linux, and Q3Arena would seriously lag the Windows/Mac release(if it were made at all).

Maybe things have changed but I was under the impression that support for linux was a good thing?

  5. Convergence?[shudder] on PDA+MP3 Player · · Score: 2

Am I the only one who doesn't want an All-In-Wonder monster device? I don't want to take my sub$1000 dollar cellphone/organizer/mp3player/virtual pet with me when I want to go jogging, or if I want to lend it to a friend for an afternoon to check out some new songs.

Plus given the delta of change with all the various portable mediums, upgrading would be a nightmare.

  6. it all comes down to volume on AMD K7 550 Hands-on Preview · · Score: 2

The more K7's that sell(to game market, server market, business market whatever) the cheaper they become. The more K7 motherboards they sell the cheaper they become.

If the K7's FPU makes it a dog for FPS games then it loses a very sizeable market share to intel. This means less hardware support and therefore less software support.

Games are important for the future of any platform.

  7. Oh, woe is me... on Q3Test in "a few weeks" · · Score: 1

If they do release the game in seperate shrink wrapped boxes rather than one fat binary then good luck finding a store that will stock them. At least up here in Canada I have to spend a week finding a store that stocks any Linux distro(try finding a non-RH one, just try.) so I don't think they'll be falling over themselves trying to stock Q3 for Linux.

Which really sucks, because this is one time when voting with yr dollar will actually mean something. If other companies see a real Linux market then they too might consider porting software/releasing drivers.
