  1. Re:.net is not evil on .NET for Apache · · Score: 1

.net is an extension of the obvious. They would have actually probably written the thing in MS-bastardized Java if Sun hadn't but the kibosh on that.

Java's just as potent a web development services platform as .net, but its drawback is that Sun doesn't have a desktop monopoly to "encourage" deployment on every desktop.

  2. "ownership-stripping GPL" on .NET for Apache · · Score: 1

I'm sorry, but you seem to have lost touch with reality for a minute.

"ownership-stripping" implies that GPL takes code away from someone that it belongs to. No, quite the contrary, it is a voluntary choice....if you use the GPL to develop a product, then you don't want the traditional ownership rights and are freely giving them up. It would be ludicrous to say something freely given has been "stripped" away from you.

Similarly, if you use a product developed under the GPL and want to extend it, the author of the original product demands that you give him/her the same courtesy they gave you...the right to see the code and make modifications.

Where do Contentville's dissertations come from?

Excerpts from the UMI® Dissertation Abstracts database are being used by Contentville, which, in turn, collects orders for full-text dissertations. Dissertation orders are fulfilled by UMI® Dissertations Publishing, whose mission is to expand scholarly communication and improve access to academic research. All Dissertation Publishing Agreements with authors remain in effect. Dissertation authors retain all rights to their dissertations. All sales will be tracked for royalty payments. All contracted royalties will be paid, per the agreement. The UMI program continues to expand access to research and maintain a permanent archive of scholarly works. Wider distribution of dissertation research is intended to support the international scholarly community.

It looks like Contentville is not the one actually collecting revenue from the documents themselves, maybe a broker's fee from the transaction. UMI is the actual seller of the theses.

    +2 Lightsaber?!?

Surely a lightsaber would rate better than that, like a +5 vorpal blade (90% chance of cutting off a body part with every successful hit).
