  1. Re:Further evidence that skinning is stupid on Winamp Skin Exploit in the Wild · · Score: 1, Insightful

If I were to like shiny, blinky, glowy things aka bling, which I don't, I'd want my entire UI to be shiny, blinky, glowy things aka bling. I find apps that don't use the default toolkit (in any OS) to really clash with everything else.

Sure MacOS X is pretty, and consistant. It would seem that Apple agrees with me. So why do they make their QuickTime player for Windows so out of place? I like non-destructive configuration options to be be auto applied (like GNOME and Mac OS do), but that style of interface is in total contract with Windows OK, Apply, Cancel system.

I think it was Winamp's fault that all media players now have to have their own skinable widget set. I wish this exploit would do something to stop the madness, but I fear not.

So a couple months later I did pick up a dual 21164 (EV56) based machine. Sure enough it did keep my bedroom warm, that is when it wasn't tripping the circut breaker. So I moved it to the server room at work, where it sits now still hosting my websites.

Video quality-wise the PS2 isn't bad, especially combined with a componet video out cable. Feature-wise the original 1.x software was very poor. The 2.x that came with the remote plus dongle package was a marked improvement. The 3.x that comes with the HDD has mostly cosmetic changes. Since my stand-alone DVD player crapped out (1800 laser hours according to the service menu) I've just been using the PS2. I'm happy enough with it that I haven't started looking for a new DVD player yet.

The Xbox DVD player on the other hand has features galore. But even with the componet video cable has a very flat and grainly looking picture. Also the I've seen the subtitles freeze on more than one DVD that uses bitmapped titles. Not to mention that it deals very poorly with any sort of scratch. I don't use the Xbox to play DVDs anymore.

Sega GT Online is doing well? I got it the day it came out. Played it once, and never put it in my Xbox again. It was just Sega GT 2002 with an online componet (poorly) grafted on. I had my fill of Xbox Sega GT a month after I got that game too.

Now Sega GT for the Dreamcast. There was a fun game. They took all my favorite features out of the game for the 2002 version.

I got the Euro import of Shenmue 2 for the Dreamcast. I copied my save game to my computer where there was a program that would alter the region bit in the file, then uploaded it back to my memory card. Then I was able to have part two make use of my old save.

Sure you get your bag stolen at the begining of the second part, but you get it back. All that is really missing is your cash. All your collectables are still there. Plus you get the moves scroll filled in a bit more.

I was really fearing that they would release the thrid part and use the same English voice actors. After hearing the original Japanese voices (the Euro version was only subtitled) the American ones make me want to puncture my ear drums. Especially the kids, like finger nails on a chalk board.

  13. Re:Control affected by camera on Game Cameras Prone to Problems? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I can't play Resident Evil because of the controls. But Shenmu has the same controls, yet I play it fine. The difference is in Shenmu the camera is almost always centered behind your back. So up does usually mean walk away from the camera, left turns left, and right turns right. Even down does a quick 180 like in RE. But because Resident Evil started with the prerendered backdrops they had fixed room cameras. Though one would think that a fixed camera like that would lead better to a camera-relative control scheme.

I've played games where the stick direction was the direction of movement on screen relative to the camera. I remember thinking as the camera slowly panned and my thumb adjusted the angle of the stick, how odd such a compensation was, but how natural it felt. Now if the camera would have just snapped to a different angle I couldn't have delt with it.

Phantasy Star Online wasn't too bad when it came to player controlled cameras. A quick flick of the left trigger would re-center the camera behind the charater's back. It became so natural feeling (perhaps because of how often I had to do it) that when I was playing another game later with a poor computer controlled camera I kept finding myself pulling the trigger trying to fix it.

  14. What is the Violation? on Debian Votes on AMD64 in Sarge · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm guessing the violation of the LSB deals with the default system libs. Where does Debian put the 64-bit libs? Where does the LSB say to put them?

I think the LSB says to put them in /lib64, which I find totally broken. Sure it allows for a 64-bit install to be built on top of an already existing 32-bit install. But what about when 128-bit processors come out? Will we have a /lib, /lib64, and /lib128? How about when there is no longer need for 32-bit support? The /lib directory would be deprecated, so the /lib64 would exist alone?

What should have been done is on 64-bit distros which wish to offer 32-bit backward compatiblity, the default 64-bit libs should be in /lib and the compatibility libs should have been moved to /lib32. The dynamic linker shouldn't have any problem figuring out what libs are needed, and load the right ones.

So what road did Debian take? If they have the default system libs in /lib, hear's to them, forget the LSB, it is broken.

This change only covers the registration of new domains (they will become active in 5 minutes instead the next day). Or changes to your registration (like DNS servers).

You can lower the recommened caching timeouts on your own DNS server. So if your ISP changes the IP of your web server other's DNS servers will request the data from your's again sooner. But of course this can place a higher load on your DNS server.
