  2. WTF? on Napster Shut Down Until Trial · · Score: 2

Damn! Now how am I gonna replace all these aging vinyl and audio cassettes with a decent digital copy? ..Guess I'll have to move on to some other file-sharing app..

Maybe if I ask the large music companies, they will give me a digital copy of all these old formats I bought - I mean, did I buy the object, or the license? If I bought something on vinyl, should I have to go back out and buy a CD copy?

    Whatever..

13 Q. What did you do with the money?
    14 A. I used $1200 and bought a high-end Sony DVD player for my
    15 TV."

Wow! is this a prime example of how the MPAA are shooting themselves in the foot or what? ..Just goes to show that the people who are engaging in these 'pirate' actions are usually enthusiasts that are spending large amounts on music, movies, etc.. As we all know, this is not about piracy, this is about absolute control over the marketplace.. As someone who produces 'cultural content' I don't like this idea at all -I don't trust Sony or anyother large corporation to protect my 'content' in my best interest - better to have it out there, enjoyed, and creating interest in what I create.

I for one was very dissapointed when Infoseek switched over to GO, and the search results were topped with payed spots -It seems to me to defeat the purpose of searching the web if paying site (i.e. commercial sites) are getting top ranking. I must say though, I am glad to see them opensource the engine... Now hopefully someone can make less commercially focused search sites, using their same engine.

  7. Regulations on Aussie Government: No License Needed For Streamers · · Score: 2

One of the key benefits of high-speed internet access is the ability to download videos, including movies, from the web.

Mmkay? DOWNLOAD videos.. So how could they possibly regulate the streaming of videos? Data is Data.. If I DOWNLOAD a gzipped mpeg video, thats not streaming- Now how could they regulate STREAMED video, if they cant regulate UNSTREAMED (downloaded) video? I think somebody over there is waking up to reality.. Good job!

YES I KNOW that there is no advantage to zipping an MPEG file.. My point is that it changes the appearance of filetype, making it difficult to regulate.

  12. MPEG-2 on Linux Supported DVD-RW Coming Soon · · Score: 1

You only need 40 gigs/hour if you are working uncompressed- there is no reason to work uncompressed, especially with VHS quality footage. I have used various video cards (Miro, AVMaster, PVR, etc). Most all of these cards us MJPEG compression, which is similar to MPEG compression, and of pretty decent quality (approximately Hi8 quality) I have even taken some footage captured through the AVmaster and dumped it to a Beta SP deck for footage aired on TV. A fast 8gig drive gives me a few hours of footage at decent quality.
