High speed internet (dsl, cable) isnt taking off becuase there is too much red tape 3rd party DSL providers have to go through in order to provide the service to the end user. Coupled with the fact that they have no clue how to market it, it makes for very slow roll-out to urban areas.
Should be easier to get due to demand..

The Modem Lives On

I live in a very small town in Georgia (Pooler), and we get cable modem. Our cable company (Comcast) is racing to get cable rolled out before DSL. They are speding lots of money in the process. The same thing is happening in Alabama, but with DSL. Things like online gaming is pushing the demand for companies to roll out high-speed access faster than the competitor. Even in small cities like mine, the competition to roll out is high. About 3 years down the road, a lot more people should have highspeed access.
This is what kills free services on the internet. People get sue-happy when they see something that offends them. I know kiddie-porn is very bad, put the ISP can't be help liable for a free service. Im sure they stated that somewhere on the site (or i hope they did). It's also terrible when people abuse the free service. This same sort of thing is happening to IRC as i speak.
The article says that they will save "big bucks" by using apple cubes. Doesn't Apple hardware cost more than Intel based hardware? And why do they chose to use Mac OS? The article says that the Macintosh II performed very well in space before in the 90's. Are they trying to tell me that someone Apple's silicon chips handle a gravityless environment better than Intel hardware?
That's becuase some linux distros not only has to perform well as a desktop OS, but also as a server platform. That will inversely increase the 'bloat.'
You are always going to sacrifice ease of use for flexibility. Thats why you have a choice on what OS you want on your machine. To some people, the computer can never be too easy to use. Thats how MS made money on their OS; make it as easy as possible to use.
