Palm OS developer/Handspring founder Jeff Hawkins's "Zen of Palm" (essentially, simplify as much as possible for a palmtop unit) really holds true with current hardware limitations.
Now, if you could give me something the size of a Palm V, with the Fitaly stamp keyboard instead of Graffiti or handwriting recogninition (plus an optional folding full-size StowAway keyboard), expansion as easy and versatile as Handspring's Springboard but as small as Sony's Memory Stick, a high-quality color display for large resolutions, built-in wireless connectivity, and long-lasting rechargable batteries...well, then you'd really have a amazingly powerful, functional palm device. Deliver it at a reasonable price point and the world will beat a path to your door.
But it looks like Samsung is taking a big step in the race for the ultimate PDA.
This could (eventually) lead to some damn fine software. I think it's high time that, as the net becomes more ubiquitous, I shouldn't have to pay long distance charges. Telephony just makes sense in terms of maximizing bandwith potential, and OST might just make quality, vesatile telephony a reality.
Let's face it, both Apple and ATi are going to lose some money over this situation.
Neither one is going out of business over it, but in the long run, cube buyers stuck with aging Rage 128 hardware are going to have to shell out the cash for a quality vido card. They won't all buy Radeons, but those who do shell out the cash for it will give ATi a bigger profit margin than they would get from the built-in card. And I doubt the change will seriously impact on the sales of the ubercool cube.
So the consumers are the losers. And Jobs is just a big loser.
