  1. Re:DC Metro Trip Planner on Google Transit Now In Beta · · Score: 1

Sure most of the big operations have them, but the smaller ones don't. I work for a medium/small transit agency in Eugene, OR. The metro area is around 200k people. We have been looking at trip planners for a while and they are not cheap. Most of the software companies that make systems that you can integrate with have their prices targeted for large agencies that can justify the cost. We can't. Google presents a very good opportunity for us though. If all we have to do is delivery them scheduling data, then we can delivery something to our customers that we were not able to before.

Recently one of our IT staff was at a conference and got a chance to talk to some of the google people who are working on this project. They said very specifically that they are interested in even supporting the smaller agencies like ours. I have no idea how quick google wants to grow this, but I'm very excited at the possibility of being able to work with them on this kind of system.

  2. More info from Checkpoint on CheckPoint Acquires Snort · · Score: 1, Redundant

Here is some more info from checkpoint including a FAQ.
    http://www.checkpoint.com/sourcefire/

I use both firewall-1 and sourcefire currently. The one thing I hope they /don't/ do is merge the two support teams. Sourcefire's support is decent, but checkpoints is down right awful.

  3. I actualy have one of these. on What Kind of PHB Do You Want? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I actualy have one of these geek-tech bosses. While this wouldn't be nessisarily true about all geek-bosses, he micromanages, A LOT. Since he knows whats going on he has an opinion about how everything should be done. It is incredibly agrivating. At the same time he does understand a lot more of the problems our group encounters. He also tends to get in the trenches and tech when we need to help. That has been a real life saver some times.

My word of warning, let your subordiant geeks do there job the way they want to. They may have a diffrent style, try to adjust to it. Good luck!

  4. IDE Raid on Backing Up 100 Gigs in an Hour? · · Score: 1

What we did to reduce backup windows was create a large IDE array. We got 13 100gb IDE drives together and we run all our backups to that. Have about 900gb of space in a raid 5 array. Once the data is to disk, we have a seperate gigabit nic with a crossover cable running to a second machine with two HP DAT40x6is which take the data off the disk and dump it to take. We have extreamly small backup windows.

The problem with this is that to restore a file older then a week or so (once it's off the disk array) we need to restore the whole backup set which can take hours. Were useing Backupexec on Windows 2000 so I'm sure whatever software you guys are useing is more flexable.

This might offer a cheap solution to your problem, good luck!
