  1. IBM Thinkpad X40 on Laptops with the Longest Battery Life? · · Score: 1

I have an IBM Thinkpad X40 and it's great. I've got the extended life battery though, but I think it's well worth it. I haven't tried squeezing all the juice out of it, but without thinking about it at all, using it with full brightness, compiling some apps, doing some websurfing, I got four hours easily. It weighs about 1.4kg with the extended battery connected, so it's still very very portable. You don't get an optical drive with it though, but if you can either stand using an external one (I know it's no problem to me) or don't even need one, you'll be just fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't the printer resolution usually refer to the actual ink spots per measure? The ink spots are usually magenta, yellow, cyan and black, and in the case of "any standard laser", only black. Let's not forget that the 100dpi LCD's are full colour 24 bit. If we were trying to make a 24bit image out of black dots, we'd approximately need 5x5 points to do that (yes, I know that's not how it works, but bear with me), meaning that our so called resolution is multiplied by a factor of 1/5, giving us only 120dpi, which isn't all that much more than 100dpi.
It is however true that the difference exists and you can make really high resolution monochrome printouts. My point is just to note that the resolution difference isn't really all that big if we're using full colour photographs, for example.
For some facts, an average 14" XGA (1024x768) laptop screen is about 91 dpi. My Zaurus SL-5500 PDA has a 3.5" 320x240 screen at about 114 dpi.

For your information, the Portege M200 is just about the only 12.1" display with an SXGA+ (1400x1050) resolution. They sell laptops with 15" XGA (1024x768) displays for crying out loud! I don't know if Toshiba markets the M200 with the resolution, but it sure does stand out from the crowd with that.

  4. Closed source firmware - so what? on Intel Releases Linux Driver For Centrino WLAN · · Score: 1

I'm not a device driver expert, so correct me if I'm wrong. People seem to bitch about the drivers because the device firmware isn't open source. I can't understand why that's such a bad thing. First of all, the most significant advantage of having open source drivers is - unless you're RMS - that you don't have to rely on the manufacturer to write new drivers for more recent kernels and such. We have that advantage with these drivers. The firmware is what the actual device is fed, and it's not like anyone's going to upgrade your NIC's kernel or anything. ;-)
If I'm not totally out on the blue I believe these drivers should be possible to port to *BSD if wanted, since the only code that is closed here is what the device uses, and not what the kernel uses.

Yet if I learn to play guitar by among other things, listening to all of the Beatles songs and playing along, do the Beatles own the rights to any future song I write? Goddamn hell freakin no! How is that any different from learning things from viewing MS, or any other persons code?

How about if you happen to get yourself a copy of the sheet music (that has not been officially released) ? I think this is a more accurate analogy.

It's probably aimed at preventing Linux interoperability with Windows machines.
I'd like to point out that the fee applies to any product that is formatted in FAT by the manufacturer so it doesn't directly affect Linux-users at all. You can still format a disk to FAT if you like. And if something else is used, I would believe the manufacturers were smart enough to use an open standard this time.
