i think the replacement(s) of o's with 0's and other "eleet" signatures may lead one to believe such a distribution to be unsafe. if you think this is wrong, then i am guilty, because i'm not touching this distro with a ten foot pole.

this sort of reminds me of an irc client no one would touch for the exact same reason. but it was relatively ages ago, so i'm going to go back to eating my breakfast. cheers!

maybe slashdot's news background checks should be a little more complete. especially since this site is rob's primary income (AFAIK). maybe a better system would prevent news posters to jump the gun like they did today and for the repeat linux vs nt story yesterday.

and a little on the conspiracy side, does anyone think this story would have been posted if it was not submitted by a girl? don't get me wrong, i'm not calling anyone a sexist. just that maybe having a female webmaster/admin/whatever made the story a tad more interesting to the poster.

  4. efficient AI's on State of Computer Game AI · · Score: 1

in my data structures course, we briefly covered game trees. this seems to be a very effective (yet ridiculously simple) AI method. but because it is recursive it totally was not efficient. does anyone here know how most game developers implement a.i ? even in starcraft, if the computer was trying to control just 30 units using the game tree method, it would probably bring a PIII to its knees.

It always disappoints me when i hear of unix users trading their rationality for religious fervor.

and i'm not saying that religious fervor will hurt the "linux movement" like many others; i don't really care much about the linux movement. i just think that as computer scientists, technicians, hobbyists, etc etc you have to remember that a particular piece of software or hardware is just a tool. once you lose your objectivity and become emotionally attached, you will become limited in your computing endeavors. i don't want to think of the hours and money that i have lost just because "i _had_ to do task X on operating system Y with Z software".

i also have a theory that the flamers and psychos on slashdot are experiencing serious deficiencies in terms of their social lives. if mail bombing unsuspecting journalists on your free time isn't a hint that you need to get out more, i don't know what is. god help us.

keep your cool and keep it impersonal - you will have everything to gain.

hehee ... we still see some of those nexts lying inside closets and unknown corners of the McConnel building. they pretty much force the cs students to use linux boxes for everything, to the dismay of everyone but me. who needs some lame commercial IDE for programming when you have the power and glory of XEmacs ?!?!? (let the flames begin ...)

a funny side note - the assembly course (273) is teaching the fundamentals of assembly programming in M68K ... however we never actually get to sit in front of those cute black boxes, we are just given the host names and told to rlogin in and compile.

i actually used to be a big next nut, but i got over it when i bought an sgi... although i'm still convinced that a next turbo color is at least 10 years ahead of the latest PC =)

    cheers ....

right on! that's exactly how i feel about it. i actually love learning all the theoretical stuff ... sorting algorithms ... ADT's ... all that is SO fun to learn.

many people do not understand the difference between a computer SCIENTIST and a programmer. looking beyond the pretention of being able to call oneself a "scientist", it is really a way of thinking. IMHO the most important thing i am learning is how to think like a scientist, and i must say it feels good. taking a 6 month programming (crash) career course at some college does *not* make you a scientist, just a programmer ... which is fine if you just want to make cash as quickly as possible. as a side note, a little cash wouldn't hurt either ... the past week i've only been eating jell-o pudding and toaster strudles, because that's all i have :) food is definately Good. *sigh*

as far as i'm concerned, everything before university sucked. but being a cs student is something i really enjoy.

i thought the article was about Oz the tv show on HBO. heh. is it generally known that "Oz" means australia? anyway ...

i think the web is a representation of what is on people's minds. i am not surprised to find out that a great chunk of the net consists of porn, and i bet most freudians wouldn't be surprised either.

i don't see why people should be protected from what is most probably on their minds. if i had kids, i'd rather they be exposed to sexual material rather than violent stuff ... but i still think neither of those has any effect on a person as long as she is mentally stable.

i remember access entertainment (maker of cool looking games like crime wave and mean streets) were making vga games way back. king's quest V was definately not the first vga game (even WC was vga and was released at least a couple years before KQV). one thing i do remember, though, is that KQV was the first game to extensively use digitized paintings as backdrops. graphically it was way ahead of its time, and it pretty much blew everyone away when released.

    -A-10 Tank Killer
    -King's Quest V
-RISE OF THE DRAGON --- play this!!! makes blade runner pathetic
    -Battle Chess II
    -Wolf3d
    -Golden Axe

-4x4 racing(?) : kinda isometric view with tiny trucks, you get to build them up as you win $, and you buy speed boosters called "nitros"... what's the name of this game?

what other games should be added to this list?

  17. word written in Visual Basic on MS Office for Linux · · Score: 1

apparently the bright young lads at microsoft write all their software in visual basic and use some kind of internal parser/code conversion utility (could i have said compiler?) that converts the VB code to C++.

but more importantly, who cares. the whole "MS Office tax" thing is bullshit. i say screw word processors and office suites in general. everyone should just switch to LaTeX. it's got a learning curve, but damn it produces some nice documents =)
