    Rather than pile on, I'll just say that I admire people who consistently back principles rather than personalities.

    Then stay off of Fark's Politics tab. The idiots over there seem to think this is no big deal.

    The more I look into it, the more I think is a case of legislating PI=3.

    That may very well be, but what do you think will happen to the people who know that pi = 3.141592~ (using "~" as a stand-in for infinity)?

    In other words, if you install an encryption program that doesn't have this backdoor, you are now a felon and the authorities have probable cause to rip your life apart looking for anything else you might be doing wrong. When just installing GPG can get you years in prison, how on earth can anyone be free?

    The problem with this law (and others like it) is that it concentrates far too much power in the hands of government. In a communist system, the government, by definition, has all of the power. So how would that be better than what we have now?

    I'm sick of Obama's change mantra, too, but let's be fair: this same shit would've happened with McCain, too. Anyone who continues to vote for either Democrats or Republicans is equally to blame for the looting and raping of America.

    If you are going to take a job that requires a clearance you simply can not do anything that you are deeply ashamed of.

    Agreed. You also have to be careful with your finances. I've seen more than one clearance yanked because of unpaid bills, bounced checks, or even just caring too much debt on credit cards. If you can't live within your means and be responsible with money, you could very easily be tempted to sell secrets for some more cash.

    How does that make a lick of sense? I said it's easier not to be ashamed of the things you do, and you think that means I'm ashamed of the things I do.

    Let me be clearer, for you: I am not ashamed of any of the things I do that various religious people would disapprove of. This includes drinking to excess on occasion, swinging with my wife and our friends, and cutting people off in traffic. Happy now?

    First, what's your definition of "screwing people over"? Because my gut says you mean "out performed their competition", which millions of successful people have done without acting unethically (e.g., lying, cheating, stealing).

    All of your previous points were spot on. But name one, single regulation that Bush either blocked or repealed that led to the economic mess. Just one. I'll wait.

    Unemployment is only 4.6% for those with a bachelor's degree or higher. Considering the kinds of jobs that are in the majority at Microsoft and Amazon, I'd say they're doing enough to create jobs already.

    The irony about your post is, if it were not for terrorism and state-sponsored threats against our allies, we wouldn't be in the Middle East in the first place. As long as the people there can make sure their oil flows and sell it to us on the open market, we have no reason to maintain a presence on their soil.

    Seriously? You people are all either engineers yourselves or work with them (or both!) And you have to ask why engineers are likely to become terrorists? How many stupid flamewars have you seen about the superiority of someone's favorite OS, text editor, programming language, or software license? Engineers are some of the most hard-headed people I've ever met; they'll die fighting over the most inane of things. Just look at Terry Childs; the guy was willing to lose his job and go to prison over passwords to his employers' network. Rational people do not behave that way, and sad to say, very few engineers (IME) are rational about their pet projects (myself included).

    Take someone with that mindset then plunk them down in the middle of a culture that celebrates death, doesn't provide a way (outside of dying) to get laid, and posits an us-vs-them mentality towards much of the world, and I'd frankly be surprised if those guys didn't become terrorists.
