Does Open Source Need Quality Standards?

    YES.

  5. Better understanding of gravity on NASA Gravity Probe Launched · · Score: 5, Insightful

Gravity is a force that effects everything in our universe (and in theory some other universes :P )

It's a force we can calculate for and predict but we still aren't completely sure HOW it works. So whether this mission proves or disproves Einstein's theories we should at least get data that will help bring us a step closer to understanding a significant force in the universe.

I'm really exicited to see the results in 2 years :)

I'd like to have a statistic on how much of that spam is do to worms relaying themselves from infected networks. 80% of the spam I now filter has a worm or trojan attached. I rarely get the marketing spam anymore.

  7. The way it should be on A La Carte Cable TV Channels? · · Score: 5, Insightful

With my current Dish Service I'm on their minimum plan that gets me the channels I wish to watch. I only watch about 10% of the channels provided yet I'm paying for all of them. I recently decided that I wanted Showtime so I can watch a couple of the shows on there (Penn & Teller's BS, Dead Like Me) but to get it I have to upgrade my entire plan and pay for more channels that I wont watch.

And they wonder why people are just downloading shows off the Internet.

  8. 2nd law of thermodynamics on Japanese Inventor's Motor Uses 80% Less Power · · Score: 1

What is sounds like is he's claiming to take electro-magnetic energy , turn it into kinetic energy, and then convert it back into even more electro-magnetic energy. I'm no physicist but I was under the impression that can't be possible since energy is inheritly lost in the conversion process.

"Young lady, in this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics"

  9. Streaming Audio on NPR's Car Talk Switches Back To RealAudio · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm still suprised mp3 streaming audio hasn't become more popular then Real or WindowsMedia. I have no trouble finding quality open source server software to broadcast live mp3 streams and the bandwidth usage(for me at least) is very acceptable.

It annoys me that sites like NPR and Air America Radio use Real, not to mention other news sites.
    Thank goodness for RealAlternative :)

  10. Development on Toyota's Trumpet Playing Robot Showcased · · Score: 2, Insightful

Investing in projects like this almost always pay off in the long run. Problem in the U.S. is that around 90% of business in the U.S. is considered small business, and most of the large businesses in the U.S. grew out of a small business. Unfortunatly the mentality of most small business owners and CEOs is to look for profit in the short term and spend more time looking at the accounting side of things instead of the economic side of things.

There are still though plenty of large companies in the U.S. that invest alot of money into R&D (IBM) but patients among americans is severly lacking these days and most people, including business owners have the "I want it now" philosophy.

On an off note I read somewhere that the pay ratio between a company CEO and their lowest paid employee in the U.S. averages 400 to 1 versus 100 to 1 in countries like Japan.
