I worked under a sysadmin for a while and it took months of pushing to get him to start implemting SSH across the board.

  6. one tool, one job on Future Trends In Home Computing · · Score: 1

It seems that we as a society are rapidly moving towards one tool to do everything. In my mind, this adds unnecessary complexity and is more prone to problems. Using your computer as your home theatre, letter writing, web working, etc, etc machine puts a lot of eggs into one basket, and then the computer dies a horrible crash.
A new user might be trying to recover the computer for a week, and that's a week without being able to do any of those things they normally did on the computer, this could be as simple as watching DVDs or listening to music.

I believe in one tool for one task (within reason of course). Link things together, but try to keep them seperate. Have your home theatre system seperate from the computer, but having a link so the MP3 player could scan your computers hard drive for MP3's would be cool, but if your computer dies, the player could still play off of your mp3 cds. And so on.

Just my point of view on it, I don't know if anyone agrees with me or what :)

I should be able to have an avi file with a txt extension and still be able to play it in Windows Media Player (shiver, painful program, painful interface, oh woah is me).

Oh well, everyone needs to gripe about something. At least all of the unix systems don't rely on file extensions, I can have solace there.

At the same time whenever I hear this stuff I'm reminded of the lyric from a song... "Paranoia paranoia everybody's coming to get me...".

Unfortunately I sort of see it as, what's coming through my lines I can do with what I want. (this is equating a country to a house, not the greatest of analogies) If I want to block all porn then I block it. The question more lies, is the government representing the people in doing this? Perhaps things would be different if more countries had religion seperated from the state (being religious myself, I'll be one of the first to admit that religions should not be governing anything other than their own religious organizations).

A good director could write a film that is not dependant on the sex (well, other than porn and movies about sex), sometimes the violence (Depends on the film), and sometimes the language.

    Here's an idea.

Everything is bound by the laws of the location of its servers. Also, if they have the domain .fr or .ca (etc) they are bound by the country they wish to represent.

If you wanted to make things really nice and confusing, you could require that any URLS that do not specify a country (.us, .ca, .fr, etc) must copmly with a set standard if Internet laws created by a governing body with representatives from the bulk of the countries. This would be general laws that hopefully would not infringe on any one nation's laws.

I think this would encourage companies to place their servers inside the nation they wish it to server (.fr sites placed physically in france) in order to reduce the number of laws they have to comply with.

So to cap. All sites comply with their locations laws, and the laws of the country they wish to serve (as determined by domain name extensions).
Any sites without an extension for the country must comply with a standard set of laws (which hopefully would represent most nations equally).

I know it would be hell to implement and change, but what do you think?
