    Ok for the temper of the little beast. It will probably not be the same as the original one's.

    But what about its talents? Like having an exceptional sharp ear? Or being able to walk on a rope? Walk on a ball? I can imagine that a Circus, for one, would be extremely interested in cloning an animal that turns out to be exceptionally skilled in being trained.

    Cloning and reimplementing .Net behavior on a non Windows platform is an interesting academical exercice. Nothing more.

    My foot that it's a privilege! Most rednecks considered it a right! That's why the license is so easy to get and that's why there are so many accidents caused by morons!

    Here in the South, some people considered that blinkers are for girls only. And those rednecks thinks that they own the left lane just because they have an expensive car or a red pickup....

    The current situation is already terrible. Most americans think they have the right to have a driver license, and that's probably why the license is so ridiculously easy to get. But now, even the failures who couldn't pass the driving tests will have access to a driver license...

    Insurance quotes will go up, up, UP !

    Off course, you need MS Office for Linux. You need it as much as you need an HTML browser.
    Not so long ago, our HR department asked for a copy of my resume. Boycotting Micro$oft as usual, I sent it in PDF and PS format... They couldn't read it of course and had no idea what to do with my files.
    My resume had been created through StarOffice, but I was not going to tell them to download StarOffice when they were not even able to visit Adobe's web site and download Acrobat Reader. I eventually sent them a RTF version and all worked well. But I can't start to imagine them sending me a RTF version of any document they create. Without a doubt, they (and others) will always send me native Word document, inconsciously assuming that MS Office is oblivious. That's why I/we need MS Office for Linux.

    Dude, you are out of your element here. 70,000 downloads per month means little? Or you mean, this is happening because there is one single dialup user who keeps retrying the download because his 56k modem has a baud fart? Yeah... right.

    From personal experience. it's a lttle unsettling to have to tell the police whenever you decide to move.

    But you still have to change the address on your driver license, right?
    And you must tell a lot of other people you are moving, so why not the police.? Think: assurance company, phone company, electricity company, gaz, TV, DSL, Frequent Flyer programs, Credit Cards, Online ECommerce sites, and so on... So why not the police?! At least they can find you if one of your relatives is involved in something bad (fatal car accident, anyone?)

    Assuming you keep backups for hardware crash and disaster recovery, I think there is a little problem in your plan. Basically, during your day at work, your two firewire drives are at the office with you. What happens then if - say - a fire erupts in the building while you are out for lunch and destroys everything? Bye, bye, backups!

    I suggest you buy a third drive and keep the same backup habits. That way, in the case of a disaster, you would still have a one-day old backup at home.

    I have 2000 and I have never, since I first installed one of the RCs many moons back, got a BSOD.

    I must say you are a lucky one. I am crashing my Win2000 more than my old NT4 SP3 at work. I am crashing at least once every two weeks. No BSOD, but the computer locking down and freezing. Only solution is the power button, which unlocks everything for half a second before forcing an emergency HALT (he, I pushed the button, right?). Stupid system.

    I would study and apply to concept of a space elevator on Mars. It would facilitate landing / take off to our sister planet and no fanatic would be able to blow it up.

    Then, once we have mastered the technology over there and removed the terrorist over here, we can build anotehr one on Earth.

    It is nearly the exact same thing for this bill:

    "The federal government would be able to hold foreigners considered suspected terrorists for up to seven days before charging them with a crime or beginning deportation proceedings. The administration had sought to be able to detain them indefinitely."

    Keep me under the question for 7 days and I might end up confessing anything just to get some sleep ...

    I had a very hard time explaining (not even convincing) my girl-friend that the new bill was bad. My point was not that I didn't believe the Government didn't need extra power to deal with the current situation but that, by giving this extra power, nobody can't be certain there won't be major abuses. Mind you, the girl is smart and usually open-minded, but in the light of what the terrorists did and could still do, she wouldn't accept any other view point.

    So, I stopped arguing with her. I drove my car to the nearest Blockbuster and rented the excellent "In the Name of the Father", a real story where innocent Irish people are abused by British officers under a brand new anti-terrorist act. I got my point.

    [... Movie Spoiler: 4 innocent Irish people spent 15 years in British prisons before being able to defend themselves again in front of a tribunal and having their case dismissed. One of them had half of his family put in jail with him, with jail time up to 14 years. His dad actually died in jail...]

    [Sorry for this flamebait, but I hate hypocrites as much as I had thieves.]

    Could somebody please tell me how is it that all those people run IIS on their home box? I won't believe that they all bought Windows 2000 (or even NT). Most likely, they just borrowed a CD from their work place to have a free (as in "I stole your beer") operating system.
    It's not friendly but I am very happy that those hypocrites have been cut off the Net. If they didn't want to pay for their OS, they should have gone for BeOS, Linux, *BSD and the like. They can only blame themselves and consider themselves lucky nobody is knocking at their door to ask them their Windows License number.

    It's all about keeping some malicious organization like Microsoft from forking Java.
    If Sun loses the control over Java, along with all the compability test suites they reenforce, they can not prevent a fork from happening. And it will. Microsoft did it already once with their Java RNI implementation.
    And if Java was made GPL, it will be the worst thing of all, since all new Java objects would extend java.lang.Object and would need to be make GPL as well. No Corporate would accept that one.
