  4. Call Before You Dig on Massive Fiber Cut Slows Net · · Score: 1

Most line have markers telling you to call before you dig. But most of the time you call and they say they will be out to mark the lines, but it such a low priotiry for them that usually it gets pushed to the bottom of their pile. So most projects can't wait for the line owners to get off thier asses and mark the line, and go ahead and dig any way to stay on schedule. (My wife works for a Gas Company and has had to call for one of their projects.)

But whatever the situation they need to be carefull when they dig.

  5. The road to mainstream on Linux Lite? · · Score: 1

This is what it is going to take to get Linux into the mainsteam.

As much as we would all like everyone to RTFM, it will never happen. The "average" home computer user never will read the manual. He/She just wants to get on thier computer and have it work. They care about the *apps*, i.e. the browser, word processor, spreedsheet, etc. not the underlying OS.

I know there have been times that I have installed RedHat or Slackware and really wanted the *easy* install option. Just press a button and go. It takes a while to configure and secure a box.

When I first started messing around with Linux I didn't have to worry about security because I wasn't wired 24/7, and had to share a line with roommates. I had time to learn the systems ins and outs *then* not until the past few years have I had to start securing my box.

You have to put yourself in their shoes. They want to use this wonderfull OS but first they gotta catch up on months/years of knowledge otherwise a bunch of script kiddies are going to take over my machine!! Not going to attract many people that way.

Give them Linux Lite, let them learn by exploring, then they can start expanding their system and grow with it.

ok enough ranbling... please excuse the spelling errors, it a Monday!!

About time they got around to fixing it.

  8. I *do* understand, but... on Feature:Why ideas should not be property · · Score: 1

I understand, and yes if someone shares and *idea* with someone else then yes the *idea* is free to all. But *any* realization of that idea (be it a book, software, etc...) is the property of the creator, and can be resticted and he sees fit. He can not be forced to allow his work be freely copied. Unless of course he wants it to be free.

You can lend someone the book, software, etc... there by sharing the idea. But copying the book, software, etc... and either selling it or giving it away is taking away from the creator of the book, software, etc...

The idea is free, but not the work.

  9. Ownership... on Feature:Why ideas should not be property · · Score: 3

I don't even know where to start.

I really hope this is not what the entire /. community thinks like. I always thought people shared thier ideas because they WANTED to not because they HAD to. There is a difference between VOLUNTARILY sharing ideas and being FORCED to share ideas. What a person thinks is his own, and no one elses.

I am all for Linux and the GPL, but I am also all for someone charging for their work. If you created it then name your price, if I want it then I'll pay.

And yes if you detect a little of Rand in my reply then you are correct.
