  1. ...then open up the online viewing of past episode on Canadian ISPs Send Thousands of Copyright Notices · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm not going to get into the topic of sending notices via ISPs... one thing from that news article that caught my eye, was the mention of NBC/Universal sending a notice, because they felt someone was downloading a TV show episode.

Well, on NBC.com most/all (I haven't checked every show) offers you to watch the entire episode the very next day of airing, for free.

But not for Canadians (and I assume anyone outside of the US). Instead, we get "We're sorry, but the clip you selected isn't available from your location." - what's the point of this artificial restriction? If you're making it available for free to some people, why not everyone? If NBC.com won't make it available, then why shouldn't I be able to just download the episode via BitTorrent? If I have a PVR so I can tape a show and watch it later (skipping all commercials), why shouldn't I be able to just download the show and watch it later?

  2. My experience on On Call and Underpaid in IT/IS? · · Score: 1

My experience with almost the same situation, is that any employees that were "on call" automatically got paid an hourly wage while they were on call (it wasn't their normal pay, it could be anywheres from 1/4 - 1/2 of their normal wage). And then anytime a situation arose that they had to respond to, or come into the office, they got extra. Minimum of an hour (even if it takes less than that), with an additional extra if it occurs over the weekends...

I'm sure the costume department had several identical ties, just in case he somehow gets it caught in a naked fanbelt and survives

I remember one episode, he got a big oil/grease/dirt/etc stain on his tie. The very next episode it was obvious that it was the very same tie, it was tied up so much shorter so the stain would be under/in the knot.. Hilarious.. the end of the tie only reached mid-chest..

  4. Okay... on Read To Your Children, Go To Jail (Not Really) · · Score: 1

Okay, so if I read this right, those f***** permissions mean that:

    - the book cannot be purchased as a gift for someone (ie: Christmas gift), as "giving" is prohibited.

    - this means that if a child wanted the book, they would have to purchase it themselves. I hope that the reader & e-book aren't too expensive!

    - a blind person would not be able to have another person read it to them (can't read aloud)

    - Libraries sure wouldn't be able to start carrying them (can't "lend")

    - Stores can't sell them (they purchase them from manufacturer, but are prohibited to "re-sell" them.)

Sounds to me like it will die a quick death, unless Adobe lessens up those restrictions...

I found it to be a pretty interesting article, however my only objection is that they referred to Perl as "ugly but well adapted to their environment". As a Perl-lover, I don't find Perl to be ugly at all - alot more beautiful-looking than alot of other languages.. Except maybe for those entries in the Obfuscated Perl contest... :)

However there's just too much for it to be a joke.. even old bookmarks right to old archived favs at UserFriendly get a 404 Not Found..
