How I come up with my passwords: Just keep a hand on the keyboard, close my eyes and hit 8 random keys and throw a SHIFT in there a couple of times. The result is something like "gT4sF5G5".
Then I write it down, and after a couple of times use I remember it and burn the note.
And don't say Windows has them even if you don't want them, because just because it gets installed doesn't mean you can't install and use something better. I do on my Win partition.
Preach it brother!
Playing MP3s? Screw Media Player - Use Winamp. Browse the web? Ignore IE and use Mozilla or Opera or Netscape or any other.
I use Media Player 6 for videos though - fast and un-bloated compared to v7.
MPEG record changes between frames. In cartoons there are (uaually) large areas of the same color (like southpark). Since those areas don't change much between frames, it is compressed quite well.
A Norwegian company called IBAS specializes in restoring data from damaged (read: fire, water, erased) drives. They've got the world's most advanced equipment for restoring data.
They have released a utility that erases disks so even they can't retrieve any old data. Basically it writes a random pattern of 0's and 1's to the disk, and it does that 12 times. Before that you could pay them to _really_ destroy the disks, they just put the disk in one of their huge degausser boxes. It said a few times and the disk was rendered useless.
A year ago I recieved a couple of used Compaq servers from the place I worked the helpdesk. They were reluctant giving it to me, but it was OK after I explained to the manager how I'd erase the drives... I'd use a program that did exactly what the IBAS software did, only for free:). Even handed him a copy of the statement from IBAS explaining that this was a safe way to delete info. As long he personally wathced me erase them, I could have them.
Eh.. have you actually _seen_ some of the shows that run on late night TV in Japan?
No wonder Japanese people are schoolgirl-tentacle-rape-scat-bukkake fixated freaks...
Of course not all of them are, but some of the shit made in japan is really mind-bogglingly twisted.
But then I've learned all this from Stileproject, so I don't know if I'm right:)
The organizers of this event have to be simply amazing.
Yeah. They are amazing. The best part is: KANDU (translated Creative Active Norwegian Computer Youth, link) also hires out (sp?) networking and security equipment (walkies) to people who want to organize their own parties.
I live in Norway, and I've been attending TG since 1998, but it is sad to see that the scener/gamer (kinda like s/n) ratio is tipping more towards gaming for each year.
I am by no means an old-schooler when it comes to scening, but I've been following it since '92 and I think it's sad that the gamer ratio have increased. But I guess that's how it gets as it becomes more commercial.
Anyhow, for you US folks that aren't into the european demo scene, check out scene.org for news and great stuff to download. Especially check out the demos and Hybris/NEMESIS' great 3D contribution from The Party 2000. It's great (albeit a quite large 150 MB download).
Jet Set Radio uses a (then innovative) cel-shading technique to make its 3d characters look like 2d hand-drawn animated ones, and so is ideal for a game based on an animated film such as Akira
You mean the same technique used by Reyes' CartoonReyes plugin for 3DS MAX, or some similar stuff for Lightwave?
You see a lot of this stuff in Futurama... the space ship sequences, bender kissing that titanic fembot, the matrix-esque when they resque prof. farnsworth... It's pretty cool how they are able to blend it in.
but is it done in real-time in the game? Then i'm impressed:)
Yep, this is actually big business here in Norway. Most people are so dumb they pay between 80p and £1 for a ringtone or logo, when there are free services out there...
It's cheap to set up a service like this, and that's why it's big business. You need a box with antenne (not sure what it's called) to accept the incoming calls. This costs about £25,000. Also you will need a server to host the logos and run the software needed. About £2500.
Then the local telco (Telenor in this case) takes about 30-50% in service fees, and you get the remaining 50-70% of the money.
With a couple hundred users every day that amounts to a great deal of money in a year...
Get all the world's governments to fund a special project:
Build a nuclear-safe room deep inside a mountain. Make sure it has no rust-enducing environment. Use as many servers and storage devices needed for storing all encyclopedias, government material and other useful documents / images / videos of today.
Make generators which will start at a press of a button, whith a sign that says PRESS HERE TO START in all the world's languages.
When the button is pressed, everything starts and the large screens on the wall displays a menu which allows you to select a language for the user interface.
The purpose of writing the interface / messages in every world's language is to make sure someone can understand it a couple thousand years from now.
Imagine the archeologists from then finding this monstrous cave, starting the generators and getting access to information previously thought long gone.
I think it's a nice thought, and don't flame me saying this is impossible. I know it probably is far-fetched:)
Seems like you need a phone with T9... like the Siemens S35 or all newer Nokia phones (6210, 3310, 8210 et al)
I own a 6210 and to type "hello" i just type 43556. Works great!
In Europe it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to hold a job.
That is fucking bullshit. Where do you get that from?
Plus you're doing what most ignorant North Americans do; you speak of Europe as one nation.
Granted, with the EU that's what it might look like soon, but they all are independent nations like Norway, which I'm from. Or Sweden. Or Germany, Belgium, France, Italy etc.
To be frank; you really sound like a 60-year-old with a grudge. Or a Nazi. Or both.
Heheh... the IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL... i've had that one too.
I thought I were smart, upgrading to SP1... after the upgrade, the entire box went BSOD with the above message. Just when I was typing the first letter of my password.
A quick F8 at boot time, enable "last known good configuration", uninstall SP1, reinstall video and scsi drivers (why?) and it was fixed.
Think about that for a second. A damaged file and an editor took out the OS?
Well, I've never come across anything like that. I've just got an error message "your disk is not formatted" and it refuses to read.
, I used another NT box for half a year (mostly running an X server to access unix boxes) and didn't have any problems. But that was all these boxes did.
I've been running Win2K Pro now for over a year, and haven't had any serious problems, except for a couple times when I'd installed some driver that f*cked up the entire system...
Of course, that's not supposed to happen (hey - I'm no Windows zealot), and it's extremely irritating to reinstall every 6 months (yes, that's an average) - seems that my Windows can't run for longer than that before it's too messy.
However, after I installed win2k I have never needed to reboot after an application error. At least that's something. I'd like to do the full switch to Linux (running Slack 7.1 on the servers), but I use 3D Studio MAX - and cannot afford to lose that one:)
Opera was certainly not written with portability in mind... It was just created to use as little resources (in Windows) as possible, in contrast to the apparent IE / NS bloatware.
And of course some extra features the other browsers didn't have; such as several pages in one window and, of course, keyboard shortcuts for everything.
..."The rich people who pay premium cash to get drugged in clubs are the reason illegal drug trafficking rings exist, which have terrible effects on society all over America, e.g., Colombia."
And that's why I am switching to smoke only homegrown... of seeds from Amsterdam of course (I don't live there btw)
Buy seeds where it's legal, grow your own - don't support those Moroccan drug lordz:(
I've used a glue pistol for all my wiring. It looks much better than stapling it or taping it up with that ugly duct tape... and it's easy to rip off if you want to.
At my workdesk I'll soon put up one of those... eh... we call it "channels" here in Norway, they're 10cm high/5cm deep, a few meters long. You get all sorts of modules for it, like power outlets and RJ45 connectors and stuff. Plus there's a lot of room for the cables.
Slipped my mind what company's making it. It's supposed to store about 2 gigs
It's made by Matsushita, which also makes everything Panasonic, Technics (IIRC) and... a bunch of other well-known electronics brands. Creative Labs' CD-ROMs and i think DVD-ROMs are Matsushita.
I cannot work with refresh rates lower than 80 Hz, if it's lower I can see the flicker.
At 60-72 Hz I can see it if i look straight at the monitor, at 75Hz I can only see it at the corner of my eye - but anyway I get a headache if I look at the monitor for too long.
My employer finally got me a computer with a GFX card and monitor that can display above 75 Hz... at home, I run 85-100 depending on the resolution 1280x1024 @ 100Hz and 1600x1200 @ 85Hz.
Heh... you must be kidding. This is a joke. Or maybe...
Beer is good. Drinking beer (or other alcoholic beverages) does not meen you automatically become an alcoholic. Just as little as smoking some pot now and then makes you a heroin addict.
Although I respect other people's views on drug/alcohol matters, I cannot stand such ignorance towards other opinions and facts.

3ds MAX is quite different from the good ol' DOS versions. But I find MAX 3.1 to be a breeze, much better than MAX 1 & 2... after one gets used to it.
I'd take the neatly packaged download or boxed version anytime. But I'd rather try out the full program before I buy it, not some crippled nag-version - that's why I usually get ISO rips of the app before I decide whether I want it or not.

Yeah I feel the same sometimes.

You're right, the terminal requires a special image to be downloaded from a tftp server.
:)
Some guy pointed me to the FTP site at the University in Oslo, which had a couple of these images for download.
Big thanks to everyone who replied, and visited the slow dual-ISDN website

As for the lexus, don't you have one too?
What is it about these Lexus cars? It's only an expensive Toyota!
What's wrong with a BMW 540 or 750? Or a Mercedes SL?
Americans really don't know what a good car is...
The above text was sarcasm

Well Win95 was released in August '95 AFAIK. It took one month for all the newbies to discover usenet (or "news" as micro$oft calls it)
Am I wrong?

Yeah... I always thought Autodesk Animator Pro was great... wish they could make a new release of that one...
