I don't know about anyone else, but I have heard of this great filter that has been around for a while. It works almost perfectly. As long as it is available, which can be all the time, it can filter nearly 99% of the smut from the children's screens. It can reward them for looking at good sites and punish them for looking at the bad ones. It can block any site, sometimes before the URL is even typed. Maybe I should patent it. Nobody seems to have thought of the idea of a parent before.
The problem is that everyone wants to do what is popular, not what is right or legal. The first amendment must be defended, even if it is not popular. If 90 some percent of the population want censorship, fine. Amend the constitution to repeal the first amendment. If it passes, you have a whole new problem. The second amendment was created to prevent the first from being repealed. You can't get rid of either of the first two without a civil war. Go ahead and take away our freedom of expression. We'll just take that to mean you want us to excercise our right (not privelige) to bear arms.
>Windows 2000 for all the terminals (that's right, >no Linux, but these are supposed to be Internet
>terminals, not telnet-equipped hacking stations).
$su
#chmod a-x/bin/telnet
BOOM! Not telnet equipped anymore!
Besides, what is wrong with having a telnet client on an "Internet" terminal? Telnet is part of the Internet too. When I was in high school, there were services that I needed, but the school network didn't provide. I used Usenet, email, and on occasion, wais. I couldn't do that from the school computers, so I had to telnet to a unix machine. If these services were offered on unix boxen on the desks, I wouldn't have needed telnet, but until everything I need can be done from where I am, I will always need telnet.
If they are worried, get rid of telnet and put a unix server somewhere on the local network. Allow ssh into that.
While Bush and Gore are both idiots, I don't want to vote for Nader. I am still going to vote for Bush because it is safer for our liberties to have a conservative, even if he is a left-leaning conservative (usually called a moderate). He may not like the net culture, but he would rather see parents control thier children than government. Gore wants you to have your life controlled entirely by government. I have to vote for the lesser of two idiots. It is sad that these are the two best candidates we can get. We should scratch out the W. from the ballots and vote in Bush Sr. again. He's much more competant than his son.
:Church attendance by early American colonists was less than 20%
Since when does church attendance equal religion? I am a Christian, but I don't go to church. I think I can get more on my own than from a church. Churches are for people who either don't know enough about the religion to practice on their own, or don't want to think for themselves and follow like sheep. The Church is not an organization with walls and congregations. There are no priests, pastors, or whatever you want to call them. It consists only of people who can think for themselves and choose to follow Jesus.
Most people at the universities use computers connected to the Internet with ethernet cards. Sue Bob Metcalf. He's the problem. Fsck. This is stupid. I feel like I just lost 50 IQ points for that.
This doesn't mean you have to stop listening to Metallica, just don't pay for their music anymore. If you have some, keep listenening to it. If you don't, do what they don't want you to do. Use Napster. If Metallica wants open-season on Napster users, it's time for open-season on Metallica. Burn CDs and give them to your friends. Start a Metallica FTP site. Hurt them. If they really are losing money because of piracy, keep it up. Someday this will go away because they have no more money. Unfortunatly for us, they still have other sources of income, like concerts, merchandise, and idiotic sheep people who do whatever Big Brother tells them to do.
AU is one of the worst! The gov't claims hacking rights. They have banned guns, so they can do whatever they want. No matter how bad the IP laws get in the US, at least we can still defend ourselves against them. If anyone in the US gov't is dumb enough to actually do a gun ban anywhere near as bad as the one in AU, there will be a civil war that may be worse than the last one. Those guns are what are protecting our IP rights and they can't take that away without blood.
>How are you supposed to globally trade freely and fairly without your say on a global level?
How are you supposed to get tarrif money if you trade freely? Free trade encourages relocation of facilities to other countries, causing people here to lose jobs. If fewer people are working, the income tax would have to be raised, not done away with. As for withdrawing from international organizations, do we really want to have a one-world government? That is what the UN is trying to be. They also take the blame away from countries that want to attack other countries. Look at NATO. The US doesn't take the blame for bombing Yugoslavia, even though we thought it was for the best (live and let live?). It was a NATO action. Then NATO wanted to take over part of the country to "ensure peace" by posting armed targets everywhere. I say get us out of all international organizations. We need to solve our problems here before we take on the rest of the world's.
Napster, the company, is irrelevant. There are other methods of trading mp3s than using servers owned by Napster. There are other Napster servers not owned by Napster that can't be touched by this ruling, especially ones in foriegn countries where the laws of the United States do not reach. There is still Gnutella. There are many ways of trading files. I plan on still being able to use Napster after tonight by accessing some of the servers that have not been shutdown. As long as there is bandwidth, there will always be file trading. They can shutdown everything else and we will go back to publishing our lists on web pages and downloading by ftp.
Why don't we help the British people by cutting off all communication to England? I don't mean hacking the systems and doing DoS attacks, I mean deny connections to servers in England. Don't allow email communications to go to the U.K. Deny http and ftp requests from the U.K. Eventually, the economy will be affected, forcing Parliament to repeal RIP. It may cause temporary harm to the British people, but it will do much less than RIP will.
