Like it or not in the game of politics it's not a matter of right or wrong, it's a matter of who you know and who owes you a favor and who you owe and how much $$$ you have and how much $$$ you can give and if you vote for my project I'll vore for yours and blah blah blah.

That's why people like Nader would get eaten alive. The job of president is all about how much money you can raise and who you get to back you. Period. That's why you don't see true leaders, you see big money/power junkies who can smile and learn the right words and phrases.

Now don't get me wrong, Gore and Bush suck too, but at least they are politicians. Like it or not you have to be a politician to work with other politicians. That's the way things get done. So while it's cool to be all anti-establishment and the like you are actually pissing in the wind. Whatever.

Lets face it, if this were a regular post that was following up an article it would be modderated as flambait. Yeah, he's venting, and that's okay, but he's basically throwing out a bunch of opinions and not backing them up at all. He implies over and over again that KDE is superior to Gnome with nothing to back it up. Okay, so he's angry, so what.

This rant does nothing for me and it certainly isn't going to make me try KDE 2.0, I'm very happy with the latest HelixCode Gnome right now, thank you very much.
Here's the flambait I am refering to:

Remember, even if Gnome does become a great desktop, that doesn't mean that KDE will stop being a great desktop.

I do find it ironic, though, that it is *Gnome* taking this step. Could anybody have possibly imagined this when Gnome started? Weren't they the "hacker desktop"? Didn't they have all the "desktop for the people" principles? Hmm... times change, I guess.

But back to KDE and the possibility of a great Gnome

Yeah, like I said... I give it a -1 troll or flambait. It's too bad really, I would have enjoyed a nice well thought out response from a KDE developer.

  8. Re:Building a desktop OS from scratch on Michael Dell Sees Future In Linux Desktop · · Score: 1

Rather than that constantly remake Linux in order to compete with Windows, it would make a great deal more sense for the FSF to create a brand new operating system designed from the ground up to be a desktop OS. Not only would this OS include all the necessary components for a desktop OS (GUI support built in from the beginning, no CLI, journaling file system, plug-and-play devices, advanced multimedia support, etc.), it would eliminate all the problems seen in current desktops -- licensing problems with KDE; feature bloat with GNOME. And right now, there's simple no free OS that does this -- sure, there's BeOS, but it's only free as in beer, not as in speech.

Um....I'm not sure I follow. First, Linux is a kernel, nothing more. Repeat after me: Linux is a kernel, nothing more.

Second - Builing the GUI into a kernel has some severe disadvantages. Just ask the users of Windows about any stability issues they might have. Many people view this as a bad thing. Perhaps a more modern X server that is designed for the needs of the modern desktop and modern hardware, yes that might be a good thing.

Third - No CLI.. uh... why? I'm typing this response on Win2K and guess what... I'm just a few clicks away from a CLI (they call it a Command prompt now, no more Dos prompt)and it's very usefull. Do I have to use it to get around Win2K..no. Do you have to use a CLI to get around Linux...no. You can configure X to start up when you boot and you can do whatever you want to do without ever looking at a CLI if you so choose. But again, why would you want to eliminate the choice. That makes zero sense.

Fourth - Your premise is that by following your bizzare specs for this new desktop os you will have no feature bloat. Uh...why? Feature bloat is everywhere I look, Gnome, KDE, windows, etc... I'm afraid that it's our nature and not really a function of a specific desktop environment.

Fifth - JFS already ships with Mandrake 7.1. You are welcome to use it if you wish. Also, not to be anal here but a JFS is typically needed more for the server arena than the desktop anyways.

sixth - Many of the hardware support issues you speak of when you refer to PnP and "advanced multimedia" support can be directly related to the total lack of vendor support for device drivers. I'm not sure how your new desktop OS plans on dealing with these issues or if they will simply dissapear like magic.

Instead of tossing the baby with the bathwater why not continue our efforts with Gnome and KDE as they seem to be making great progress towards becoming viable desktop solutions running ontop of *nix.

Yeah yeah.... your post reeks of 1337ism and smells of self-rightous pious'ism and the like. But... it's sad to say that you also have scored a few points for the cold hard truth (which will get you modded down BTW)

I'll have to admit that part, a very very very small part, of me likes to use linux because of the 1337 computer hacker nature of it all. In fact I loved my first bloody install (years ago) where everything went wrong and I spent a few weeks researching and hacking and learning... until I was finally staring at the localhost login prompt. Comnpare that the my latest install of Mandrake 7.1 where all I had to do was point and click.. and half an hour later was "surfin the net" I honostly belive that my mom really could install Mandrake.

But I digress... the main point here is that...you are corrct NO SELF RESPECTING LINUX USER WOULD PUT AOL ON HIS BOX... but.. there are many normal users out there on earth who might like to try linux and who also might like AOL. So.. the 1337ism is now almost officially over and linux is headed for true mainstream. Ah well.. maybe it's time to look at Plan 9 or Inferno or something.

Meanwhile Bush hired a someone who hired a person who was more than happy to shell out the $$ and was perhaps afraid not to toe the line... this is a bad thing IMHO.

Yep...I'm being just a bit silly here but I honostly believe that the whole presidential race thing is so much propaganda and smoke and mirrors and lies and "Tell them what they want to hear" and "READ MY LIPS" and "One thousand points of light" and blah blah blah...well you get the idea. It is especially hard if your ideals are significantly different than those of mainstream society. But where would we be if Martin Luther King had reached a "compromise" with Jim Crow legislation? What if Nelson Mandela decided to change his position in order to avoid the inconvenience of prison? The fact is, the actions you take are important, no matter how unimportant you may feel as an individual. It is only through many small individual acts that large-scale change will happen. I would guess that many of the engineers read some of the marketing stuff thay comes from the marketing department and just shake their heads.
