I think that is a very good post; comprehensive and to the point.
I'd mod it up had I not wasted my moderator points on some crap...

  2. Re:What's the correct way to upgrade my KDE? on KDE 3.0 is Out · · Score: 1
You should probably uninstall the old packages first. This is what it says in the Red Hat README file in one of the mirrors that I got through to:

This directory contains Red Hat Linux 7.x packages of KDE 3.0 and some
other useful packages KDE has been compiled with, such as gphoto2 and CUPS.

Some post-3.0 fixes from KDE_3_0_BRANCH in CVS are included in the packages.

Installation has been verified to work on 7.2 and Skipjack 1 (first beta
of the upcoming release); while it hasn't been tested, the packages should
work on 7.0 and 7.1 as well.

KDE 3.0 final will be included in the next beta of Red Hat Linux.

Please report bugs to http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla under
the "Red Hat Raw Hide" component.

Recommendation: Since we have switched to building more modular KDE
packages, users of KDE 1.x or 2.x should remove the older KDE packages
and then install the new ones rather than trying to update.

Deleting the old packages will not delete settings etc. stored in the
    users' home directories.

To remove the old packages and install the new ones, run:

    cd /where/you/downloaded/the/KDE3/RPMS
    rpm -e `rpm -qa |egrep ^kde`
    rpm -Uvh *rpm

Debian Euro HOWTO is probably also useless with RH, but maybe I'll give it a look.

  5. Euro symbol support in Linux? on The Euro · · Score: 1

I've tried a few things but it seems difficult (or impossible?) to get the euro symbol working in console, KDE and other X applications. Mozilla seems to be the only app that automatically supports both displaying and producing the symbol.

So, has anyone successfully got the euro symbol to work in Linux (particularly Red Hat)...?

Yes, but fix for the second bug is going to fix that too. Read the comments more carefully. I don't know of any workarounds, but I'm pretty sure that they are going to fix this. (This problem is due to no-cache directive on slashdot pages...)

IMHO there were some pretty nice themes in themes.org before it was fucked up... (Not sure if they are available at wm.classic.themes.org)

Just take a theme with nice colors, fonts etc., change the background picture to something from digitalblasphemy.com and you're all set.

Who cares what the version number is? Window Maker has been perfectly stable and usable for years.

It's only good that they don't add too much bloat + unnecessary features. I like it the way it is - simple, fast, light-weight, and really good-looking if you select a nice theme.

Nowadays I prefer the latest KDE on my main machine, but with older computers (say 500MHz or so...) wmaker really kicks ass.

I tried to change it in preferences -> handlers -> programs -> mailer, but Galeon kept using its own version of Mozilla mail when clicking mailto-links...

Here's a quote from a webpage describing the computing facilities:

Our workstation network consists of about 500 PCs (mostly Pentium III, more than half of them with flat TFT monitors) running Linux. Windows 2000 can be used as an alternative to Linux. More than 70 of the workstations are mobile laptops that can join and leave the network dynamically.

I read somewhere that this is most likely the largest centrally administered Linux network in Finland... Being a student there, I must say that it's kinda cool :)
