    Context:

Gore: "I have created a cure for cancer and can provide fusion power at .001 cents/ gigawatt-hour. I also know where all your missing socks are, who shot JR, how Dan Quayle got to be VP, how to earn $$$ in your spare time, and why Hollywood keeps giving Demi Moore millions of dollars. Whilst still at High School, I invented powered flight, the space hopper, the vacuum flask, and the push-up bra. I was also the first man on the moon, the first white man to reach the Americas, the first lungfish to crawl out of the primordial ocean. Oh, and I made that stupid internet also."

  2. Re:Finally! on Sybase to Open Souce Watcom C/C++ & Fortran Compiler · · Score: 2

    MSDEV pros:

    1. Edit 12Mbyte text files as easily as 12k.
    2. Allows multiple pre-compile, post-build, custom compile, etc, features.
    3. Lots of cool dockable windows.
    4. Menus, toolbars, etc. fully customisable.
    5. Piss-easy MFC dialog boxes.
    6. Will write you a 1000-line program with half a dozen key-presses: boosts productivity!
    7. No paperclip.
    8. Works better than most M$ software.
    9. It's not EMACS.

    MSDEV cons:

    1. Constant pauses as it loads its browse info.
    2. Annoying autocomplete windows you have to press escape to get rid of.
    3. Bizarre regexp syntax: \( is a grouping operator, \* is an asterisk.
    4. Second-rate binary editor.
    5. Occasionally decides to remove all menus, toolbars, etc, from display, leaving only a blank window and you have to re-install.
    6. 'Can't see the wood for the trees' help system.
    7. Not as easy as Borland C++ Builder.
    8. Can't auto-colour VHDL, Fortran, Perl, etc.
    9. Using M$ product inspires feelings of guilt.

The other argument in its favour: have you ever tried using Visual C++ from the command line? Ugh!

  3. Re:Sad state of Russia on Kursk Destroyed By Cavitation Missles? · · Score: 1

Not really that simple. Russian defence spending is way over what it needs to counter any external threats.

The big problem is that it's got an absolutely enormous army, navy, air force, etc, but doesn't have enough money to adequately fund any of them. So it needs to reduce the size of its army dramatically if it wants to be able to perform any kind of operation. It's not much point having hundreds of thousands of troops if you can't feed any of them.

These recent naval exercises were a (sadly failed) attempt at a morale boost for a navy which until recently has scarcely been able to put to sea. But now, confidence in the generals is at new lows.

Just as in Afghanistan, where demoralised Russian troops were unable to defeat lightly-armed mujehadeen (sp?), the Russian armed forces' problem is this: it doesn't matter how big your army is, without proper motivation, funding and support, they're worthless.

On the other hand, the Russian army might be more use, and better for morale, if they started tackling crime and racketeering at home, which is far more of a threat to Russian national security than China, India or the USA.

Oi, grammar Nazi, read a grammar book. That colon was fine and dandy; any reference will tell you a colon can be used to mean 'viz' or 'namely' in such situations. Get a life.

"My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life..." --Ayn Rand

Anyone who thinks of Ms Rand as a Nietschean should note that Nietzsche has little or nothing to say about as petty a concept as happiness. Like most of N's devotees, followers of Rand forget the bit that the most important form of mastery is SELF-mastery.

Incidentally, the Routledge companion to philosophy manages a generous 8 lines for Rand, tho only 2 are on her actual system of thought.

And how come no one's brought up the little fact that Rand believed women should stay at home and, er, not be philosophers. The standard of debate here is just too high!

In fact, and this might seem really far out, why don't we pay illegal immigrants $1/hour to do our sums for us?
